This article is a new study on the Iconography of contemplating (思惟) figure in Northern Wei Dynasty(北魏385-534), based on the Sutra about "the visualization of the rebirth of the Bodhisattva Maitreya in the heavenly paradise Tusita(觀彌勒菩薩上生兜率天經)". The contents of which Sutra indicated that adherents of Bodhisattva Maitreya would be reborn in heavenly paradise Tusita, where it was rewarded for ten Virtue(十善). They had to train to the contemplating Visualization. It is called here Samadhi-Visualization(思惟觀). Monk Wonhyo(元曉617~686) commented to the technique Visualization(觀), that meant "concentrating one`s thoughts in a detailed visual examination". Devotee has immediately a vision of Maitreya during Samadhi-Visualization. Devotee of Bodhisattva Maitreya are certainly doing ten Virtue and complying with the buddhistic rule, then they are trying to twofold Samadhi-Visualization of Bodhisattva Maitreya and of heavenly paradise Tusita, The Sutra of the Pratyutpanna Buddha Sammukhavasthita Samadhi(般舟三昧經) translated by Lokaksema (支婁迦讖, or 支讖, 147-?), which Sutra involved Monk Huiyuan(慧遠334~414) the method of his visualization. Huiyuan explained that appeared the Buddha during visualization immediately before his devotee, in which they are actually seeing their`s own self-vision. Samadhi-Visualization has both sides, which I called active visualizer(觀者) and passive visualizer(被觀者) in this article. Such as active and passive visualizer applied to approximately 140 shrines in Yungang caves(雲岡石窟), each of which shrines are made up triad Buddha, one major figure and two attendants figures. They are Maitreya figure with crossed leg(交脚像) as passive visualizer and his right and left contemplating attendant figures as active visualizer. Which of contemplating figures(思惟像) are sitting Bodhisattva and inhabitant of Heaven(天人) figure with one`s legs half-crossed(半跏像), and standing and kneeing monk figures. They have their`s own iconography as disciplinant(修行者), are doing Samadhi-visualization of heavenly paradise Tusita. I have also included the results of my research on the contemplating figure, which crown of National Treasure No.78 has depicted on Samadhi-Visualization of heavenly paradise Tusita in detail. This paradise Tusita is the extremely happy place, where the adherents of Bodhisattva Maitreya should be exactly doing visualization. It explains the meaning of smiling Bodhisattva of National Treasure No.78.
