The Christian liturgy has developed in a variety of different ways, especially since the 4th century, when the Roman empire adopted a new, positive attitude toward Christianity. During the 8th and 9th centuries, Christian culture reached a climax with the Carolingian renaissance, which marks a golden age of the liturgy and its music. Until the 8th century, the Christian liturgy maintained a rather objective and impersonal mode of expression. Thereafter liturgical music enlarged its range of expression in several ways; new non-biblical texts were added to the liturgy, the chant itself took on new, more elaborate forms, and polyphonic performance was practised.
Troping (the addition of new verses or musical phrases to older chants) became a regular part of the liturgy from this time. From the 9th century onward various types of organum, that is polyphonic singing, are recorded, one of its greatest periods of flowering being the Notre-Dame era in the second half of the 12th and the beginning of the 13th century.
This study is concerned with the music of the Notre-Dame School and especially the composer Magister Leoninus and his historical achievement, the facts known about his life in Paris and the 'Magnus liber organi', that is the music attributed to him by the writer Anonymous IV.
Using the manuscripts F and W₁, which contain his organs, together with the manuscripts Paris Tat. 1112 and Provins 12, which preserve the tropes of this time, I have tried to illuminate the types of musical structure and methods of composition in this special period. In particular, four examples of music of this time have been selected from the Third Mass of Christmas Day, each of which illustrates a different aspect of musical practice. The first example gives the Introit 'Puer natus est' with added trope verses 'Gaudeamus' The second example shows the Kyrie with trope verses 'Cunctipotens genitor', where texts were simply added to a melismatic Kyrie melody; here the French musicologist Marcel Pe´re`r s has added simple parallel organum, according to the typical method of the time, which is useful for this study. The third example, the Gradual 'Viderunt omnes', has melismatic organum upon the chant melody, especially at the syllable 'om-', which has as many as 65 notes in the upper voice against just one in the chant: consonances with the chant (3rd, 5th, 6th and 8ve) are formed at all important points. The Florence manuscript(F) preserves eleven two-voice settings of 'Benedicamus Domino' for the office. These pieces might also be used on special feast days such as Christmas or Easter Day at the end of Mass instead of the usual 'lte missa est'. So the music of the 'Benedicamus' forms my fourth example of music for Mass. This Benedicamus setting is a particularly important part of this study because of the section in modal rhythm at 'Domino'. I have transcribed this part of the music in mensural notation, a new and very valuable exercise. It is my hope that the transcriptions in the Appendix will assist the reading of the manuscripts.
