This study, conducted with the students of Ewha womans University as the subject, concerns itself with determining the extent of college students' aptitude for the various aspects of their life on campus, thereby to help them reduce intellectual wastage and thus to improve the guidance service for them.
The stratified sampling over the period of a year (April 1968-March 1969) covered 2,078 students(804 from humanities & social science, 663 from natural science, 366 from music and arts, and 245 from physical sciences.
The major findings of this study are as follow:
1. The majority (86%) of the Ewha students are from urban areas, of whom 79.5% are from Seoul. The social and economic status of their families is of middle and high bracket, whereas 40.3% of them are not entirely satisfied with their whome environments.
The source of their school expenses breaks down as follows; 75.&% of them are supported by immediate families, 6.4% self-supporting, and 3.6% by various scholarships. The means of self-supporting are: private tutorship(60%, research/survey help, clerical assistance(mostly typists). Arts assistance, graphic designing, translation, printing and scribal assistance.
The majority of the students enjoy participation in different extra-curricular activities.
2. Tow-third(2/3) of them choose their major subjects for study in college at or during the second semester of their last year (3rd) of high school, 22.1% of them at the time of filling the application for entrance to college, and 2.1% of them at the moment of submitting the application.
The choice of major subjects is made entirely by self(59.6% of them base it on their interest and aptitude, and 29.2% of them on the prospect of their passage in the entrance tests.
3. Subsequent dissatisfaction in the major subjects thus chosen is voiced some 20% of them; 66.6% of these begins to feel it during the first year on campus. Furthermore, about 60% of the students would seek transfer to other fields of study, where possible, which is a proof sufficient enough to decide that many students feel some measure of dissatisfaction in their campus life.
4. The number of those repeating entrance tests has been on the increase, 28.1% of the successful applicants for the school year of 1969 having been such repeaters. After a first failure, 85% of the repeaters choose departments different from the one they failed to enter the previous year, only 15% of them trying the same one. The psychological impact which they have to experience during the preparatory period for retrial is considerable, and yet their enthusiasm for entrance lead them to make effective use of the time.
5. The purposes of students' visits to the counselor's office can be classified as following: 45% of them on character problems, and the rest on study and school life. Marriage and related matters, employments and future career, and home environment problems. In this connection, it can not be overlooked that the mental aspect of Ewha students' life is increasingly affected by their emotional and temperamental instability, which in turn is in fluencing their inner life to no negligible extent.
Suggestion to:
1. College Entrants and Their Parents:
-- Choice of major subject for study in college should be made on the basis of various tests, objective data, and systematic guidance.
-- Efforts should be made toward avoiding subsequent dissatisfaction in the major subject once chosen, by being sufficiently aware of what it involves to pursue the particular field of study.
-- Choice of future career should be made on the basis of sufficient awareness of one's interest ability, and individuality.
2. High School Authorities:
--In view of the fact that majority of students proceed on to higher education with out sufficient preparation, due extent of guidance service should be rendered.
--As it can not be denied that the guidance service rendered in the high schools of Korea lacks substance, the service should be substantiated through staffing specialized counselors.
3. Higher Education Authorities:
The seriousness of the problems before students can not be overemphasized, the problems of their study, school expenses, extra-curricular activities, inaptitude, and their personal life. Scientific and effective solution to these problems would only be possible by expanding the service and activities of guidance centers.
