The purpose of this study is to examine the gender relations and power relations of Shilla and Goguryeo as reflected in their founding myths, and to confirm the interrelatedness between them. The study showed that gender relations and power relations-as well as the view of women and the view of the other-as reflected in the contents of the founding myths were closely interrelated.
In the founding myths of Shilla(新羅), King Hyeokgeose(赫居世) and Queen Alyoung(閼英) were deified to largely similar degrees in their portrayals in terms of symbolism and date of appearance. In mythological records, this is connected to how deity status was also conferred to the chieftains of the six clan society villages called ‘Yuk-Chon(6村)’, who predated the arrival of Hyeokgeose. The records on the three steles that were discovered in the Eastern part of Gyeongju show that along with the king, the leaders of the six political units called ‘Yuk-Bu(6部)’ were also recognized as ruling powers up until the early 6th century. If this historical fact provides the background against which the myth of the heavenly provenance of the 6 chieftains were included in Shilla’s founding myth, Alyoung’s status in the founding myth maybe regarded as reflecting the actual historical status of women among the ruling class of Shilla.
In contrast, starting from her very first appearance, the treatment of the female protagonist of Goguryeo(高句麗)’s founding myth, Yuhwa(柳花), is blatantly indicative of gender relations as a power relation - with the male as the subject and the female as the object. Furthermore, even when she first came into contact with earthly people, Yuhwa’s divinity was portrayed as being damaged due to the stigma-like vestige of the punishment she received from her harsh father, Habaek(河伯). Despite the failed manifestation of his mother’s divinity, Jumong(朱蒙) performs various heroic feats that appear to demonstrate his divine lineage-such as hatching from an egg laid from his mother’s flank, accelerated growth, extraordinary talent, and his escape from Buyeo by virtue of his supernatural power. This gender asymmetry in how divinity is manifested in the myths is also apparent in the relationships between Haemosoo(解慕漱) and Habaek, and Jumong and King Songyang(松讓). The degrees of divinity of each of these figures were not expressed as enumerations of objective abilities but as clear distinctions between winners and losers amid acts of rivalrous conflict.
The contents of the myths of Shilla and Goguryeo also differ in terms of mutual relationships. Shilla was characterized by relationships of mutual cooperation. Alyoung did co-rule with Hyeokgeose in what is presumed to be a division of duties. Also, Hyeokgeose and Alyoung had a cooperative relationship of co-existence, exchanging help in the form of nurturing and good rule, with the original residents represented by 6 chieftains.
Mutual relationships in Goguryeo’s founding myths were characterized by high tension. In the course of her life, Yuhwa was sequentially violated by Haemosoo, Habaek, and Geumwa. The patriarchy of Buyeo may be regarded as the background reason for this. The opportunity for Yuhwa to recover her divine status amid her woeful state arrives via Jumong’s quest to overcome his crisis. Yuhwa urges Jumong, who was being threatened with assassination, to escape. She also sends him grain seeds by way of pigeons so that he might have a successful start in a new land. It is through such actions that Yuhwa gained her status as a maternal symbol and a deity of life and fertility. However, both the violation in the earlier half of her life and the divine status in the latter half of her life are attributable to the male family. Thus, the dependent value of Yuhwa’s existence may be regarded as reflecting male-centric gender relations.
A tense relationship characterized by rivalry is also apparent in the relationship betwee...
