Hygienic products such as disposable sanitary napkins and disposable diapers used for temporary storage of human urine and discharges such as menstrual blood have the potential to deliver potentially harmful substances through the skin while directly contacting the human skin. Therefore, the Korean Ministry of Food and Drug Safety(MFDS) has established the standards and test methods for the safety of these products. The majority of sanitary napkin and disposable diaper products use super-absorbent polymer particles for storage of waste products, but the physicochemical properties of these polymers are not provided by the manufacturers. The Korean Ministry of Food and Drug Safety(MFDS) has not yet established relevant regulations, and it has not yet been studied by the academic community either. In this study, superabsorbent polymer particles were extracted from the absorbent of a commercial disposable diaper, and 0.5 wt. % Cupric sulfate was dissolved in a saline solution, and the process of swelling of the particles over time after contacting the saline solution was recorded as a photograph while observing with a video microscope. The copper ions (Cu++) in the aqueous cupric sulfate solution have a blue color and bind to the anions of the superabsorbent polymer particles, allowing transparent super-absorbent polymer particles to be observed under a microscope. Video micrographs of the super-absorbent polymer particles were analyzed to calculate the cross-sectional area of the super-absorbent polymer particles, and the volume of the particles was calculated from this cross-sectional area to investigate the change in the swelling ratio of the polymer particles relative to time after contact with the saline solution. The super-absorbent polymer particles swelled while absorbing moisture very quickly upon contact with the saline solution, and the volume increased up to 24.03(±4.15) times. It was observed that the swelling rate of the super-absorbent particles, which had rapidly swelled initially, decreased as time passed, and reached equilibrium after about 2 minutes and the volume of the particle became constant. In order to explain the selling behavior of the polymer particles upon contact with the saline solution with Fick s 2nd law, a graph was drawn for the natural logarithm of the volume ratio against time t, and the value of the swelling constant gradually decreased and converged to zero. This is the first time that a superabsorbent polymer contained in disposable diapers or sanitary napkins has been separated and tested for properties. By monitoring the swelling process of the superabsorbent polymer in contact with urine or menstrual blood in real time, it will be helpful to understand the absorption behavior of urine and menstrual blood by superabsorbent polymer particles included in disposable diapers or sanitary napkins. It is hoped that this research will help in the development of more convenient and safer hygiene products.
