This study contemplated the Story of Concubine written in many historical storybooks such as “Eo-wooYadam”, “Gye-seoYadam”, “Cheong -guYadam”, “Dongyahuijip”, “Maeonghanrok”, “Cheonyerok”, “Gimoonchonghwa”, “Geumgyepildam”, “Chasanpildam”, “Dongpaeraksong”, and “Cheongyadamsoo”. The Story of Concubine is a story where a concubine appears as a main character, or takes a significant role in solving cases. It is also a story about the people who obtained concubine rank by penetrating into the nobleman’s society from the societal minor class, and devoting herself faithfully as a member of the family. In Chosun society, taking a role as a family member meant making contributions on maintaining and succeeding one’s family. However, from the very start, the concubines were not in position to exert such contributions, and other family members also didn’t have any expectations toward them. But the concubines described in Story of Concubine were different. The Story of Concubine can be divided into Wise-wife and Wise-mother type, Integrity-Righteousness type, Remarried type, Supportive and Fortunate type, Greedy and Corruptive type. In those historical storybooks, the concubines were described as efficient voluntary thinkers with appropriate behaviors, and as a character beneficial to the men and family. This shows the indication of their strong desire to be part of nobleman’s society even with concubine position. The upper class males who were in the position to enjoy storybooks, would never had wished more than for a women to become a concubine voluntarily, or provide beneficial behaviors for males. This also could have worked as a good reason for justifying concubinage. There are overwhelming cases of positive concubine image shown in the Story of Concubine. The concubines had special ability or talents, and thought and acted based on the good trust they had on clear perspectives and wise judgments. Also they made a great contribution for men and family by earning a position in the Government, collecting great wealth, and giving birth of offspring. Following such trends, in many cases the perspectives on concubines were positive, such as wise and intelligent, women realizing the faith, devotion, diligence, and contributing to the prosperity of the family. It is highly possible for the writer’s intention to have intervened in the story who viewed conforming to patriarch rule as a right thing to do at the time. However after 17th century, because the Confucianism took strong root among classes even below the commoner, and got accepted as a universal value, we cannot rule out the possibility where many more stories had been produced. The consciousness of author’s wish can be understood, through the type of Story of Concubine, aspects of concubine’s behavior, and the appearing image of concubines shown in the book. First of all, they considered the realistic “life” more important than blind faith. Secondly, they wished to be happy by finding and getting rid of the deficiency of oneself from others. Thirdly, they wanted to penetrate into the nobleman’s society by showing adaptive attitude towards nobleman’s social order, and wished such social hierarchy to continue. With an active interchange and communication between man and woman, societal mainstream and non-mainstream, ideological life and practical life, the Story of Concubine, shows how to endeavor for better life. This reconfirms the fact that the Historical Storybook was the crossroad passage between the medieval times and the modern age. However, because the Story of Concubines never broke itself out of the frame as nobleman’s society, it could never take its root within the modern literature, and this leaves some inconveniences.
