한국독립운동사의 ‘새로운 인식’을 반영한 전시 내러티브 변화 －독립기념관 상설·기획전시 사례를 중심으로－ = Exhibition Narrative Changes Reflecting the ‘New Perception’ of the History of Korean Independence Movement: Focusing on the Case of Permanent and Planned Exhibition at Independence Hall of Korea

This study attempted to clarify the relationship between historical research and historical exhibition as a factor influencing wartime narratives and messages through the case of the Independence Hall of Korea, which performs both research and exhibition functions. As a research method, we first looked at the new research trends in the history of the Korean independence movement to convey the universal values contained in the Korean independence movement and to identify the meaning and status of world history, followed by the cases reflected in the permanent and planned exhibitions of the Independence Hall of Korea.
The ‘new perception’ of the history of the Korean independence movement, which has emerged since the mid-1990s, has expanded and advanced into various research topics. This was a process of examining the Korean independence movement in the context of world history beyond the scope of Korean history and ‘rediscovering’ the essence and universal values of the Korean independence movement that had not been discovered because it was immersed in ‘national independence’.
The accumulation of research results reflecting the “new perception” of the history of the Korean independence movement led to the demand for popularization of academic achievements through exhibitions, which was reflected in the 3rd exhibition replacement master plan of the Independence Hall of Korea. Based on this, the four exhibition halls, which have been replaced since the fourth hall in 2017, have embodied the main theme, “peace and empathy,” according to the functions and themes of each hall. While the fourth hall, which is an emotional hall, focused on conveying the universal value of the independence movement, the second, third, and sixth halls, which are the main halls, expanded the contents related to the history of the Korean independence movement in the context of world history among the exhibition narratives.
Meanwhile, the exhibition of the “Independence Movement with the Allies” series, which was held three times from 2021 to 2023 as a special exhibition for the Liberation Day for the Allied Powers, was an attempt to materialize a new perspective that “Korea’s independence movement was with the Allied Powers” through a special exhibition and to inform the general public for the first time. The three special exhibitions conveyed a common message, but in the detailed composition of the exhibition, the historical characteristics of the joint anti-Japanese wars with China, the United States, and the United Kingdom were found and differentiated.
Regarding the exhibition of the Independence Hall of Korea, which was intended to supplement the perspective of world history and convey the universal value of the independence movement by reflecting the new perception of the study of the history of the Korean independence movement, visitors responded, “It was good to know the new content, but it was somewhat difficult.” Regarding the contents of the exhibition changed through the third exhibition replacement, there were also questions about the attributes of the Allied Powers’ “imperialism”. As such, “gap and tension” occurred in the process of realizing the history of the Korean independence movement from a global and universal perspective as an actual exhibition, but this can be supplemented by deepening research achievements such as finding specific cases and referring to exhibition cases of modern and contemporary memorials and museums around the world. As a result, we hope that the Independence Hall of Korea, which is set to mark the 80th anniversary of liberation and the 40th anniversary of its opening, will leap forward as a memorial hall that not only Koreans but also foreigners can sympathize with.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 전시 내러티브와 메시지에 영향을 미치는 요인으로서 역사연구와 역사전시와의 상관관계를 밝히려는 문제의식에서 출발하여 연구와 전시 기능을 함께 수행하고 있는 독립기념관 사례를 통해 이를 규명해보고자 했다. 연구방법으로는 한국독립운동에 담긴 보편적 가치를 전달하고 세계사적 의미와 위상을 규명하려는 한국독립운동사 연구의 새로운 연구동향을 우선 살피고, 이어서 독립기념관 상설·기획전시에 반영된 사례를 검토했다.
1990년대 중반부터 등장한 한국독립운동사 연구의 ‘새로운 인식’은 다양한 연구주제로 확장되며 심화·진전되었다. 이는 한국사의 범주를 뛰어넘어 세계사적 맥락에서 한국독립운동을 살피고 그간 ‘민족독립’에 몰두해 발견하지 못했던 한국독립운동의 본질과 보편적 가치를 ‘재발견’하는 과정이었다.
한국독립운동사의 ‘새로운 인식’을 반영한 연구성과의 축적은 전시를 통한 학문적 성과의 대중화 요구로 이어져 독립기념관 제3차 전시교체 마스터플랜에 반영되었다. 이를 토대로 2017년 제4관을 시작으로 현재까지 교체 완료된 4개 전시관에는 각 관의 기능과 주제에 따라 대주제인 ‘평화·공감’을 각관의 특성에 맞게 구체화했다. 감성관인 제4관이 독립운동의 보편적 가치 전달에 주력했다면 주제관인 제2, 3, 6관은 전시 내러티브 가운데 세계사적 맥락에서의 한국독립운동사 관련 내용을 확충했다.
한편 연합국인 중국, 미국, 영국을 대상으로 2021년부터 2023년까지 세 번에 거쳐 광복절 특별전으로 개최된 ｢연합국과 함께 한 독립운동｣ 시리즈 전시는 ‘한국의 독립운동이 연합국과 함께 했다’는 새로운 관점을 특별전을 통해 구체화하고 일반 국민들을 상대로 처음으로 알린 시도였다. 3번의 특별전은 공통의 메시지를 전했지만 세부 전시 구성에서는 중국, 미국, 영국과의 공동 대일항전에서 보이는 역사적 특징을 찾아 차별화했다.
한국독립운동사 연구의 새로운 인식을 반영해 세계사적 관점이 보완되고 독립운동의 보편적 가치를 전달하고자 한 독립기념관 전시에 대해 관람객은 ‘새로운 내용을 알게 되어 좋았지만 다소 어려웠다’는 반응을 보였다. 제3차 전시교체를 통해 변화된 전시 내용과 관련하여 연합국의 ‘제국주의’ 속성 등에 대한 문제제기 등도 있었다. 이처럼 세계사적, 보편적 관점의 한국독립운동사 연구가 실제 전시로서 구체화하는 과정에서 ‘간극과 긴장’이 발생했지만 이는 구체적인 사례발굴 등 연구성과의 심화, 그리고 세계 근현대 기념관·박물관의 전시사례 참고를 통해 보완할 수 있을 것이다. 이로서 광복 80주년, 개관 40년을 앞둔 독립기념관이 내국인뿐 아니라 외국인도 함께 공감하는 기념관으로 도약하기를 기대해본다.
