Modernity is a concept that belongs to a qualitative category rather than a historical category, and means differentiation from the past, that is, the ‘pursuit of newness’. The 17th century is a revolutionary period of philosophy and science. Descartes is at the center of the revolution. Descartes can be said to be a philosopher who broke with the Middle Ages and opened the modern era with the shift of thinking that human reason alone can reach a definite perception without relying on any power of transcendent existence. With the completion of metaphysics in which the concept of the modern subject is formed, it can be said that science and technology that human subjects explore and use for the natural world emerge. Descartes is a philosopher of modernity who criticized the teleological view of nature in the Middle Ages of Scholar philosophy and established a mechanical view of nature.
Historical modernity refers to the era following the feudal era, and if Jujuhak is defined as feudal, Silhak can be said to be modern. If Toegye’s and Yulgok’s discourse is feudal, the Personality Dongyi debate can be defined as a new discourse, or modernity. Because the Personality Dongyi debate took place in Joseon, an original and creative work to construct a systematic and consistent logical system of Juhee’s Neo Confucianism, such as ‘the theory four basic minds and seven emotions of human beings’, or ‘the theory of heart of human beings or truth’, was carried out in the Joseon Dynasty, which means that this debate or the movement to systematically organize Juee’s Neoconfucianism had continued since the 12th century to be fully bloomed at the period.
While Descartes understood nature mechanically, Spinoza understood it as living nature. Descartes’ view of nature is very similar to that of neoConfucianism. It can be said that Descartes and neoConfucianism are basically attempts to understand nature within a systematic principle. However, if Descartes sets God apart from nature to explain the relationship between nature and objects in nature, neoConfucianism regards nature and God basically the same and different one. If Neo Confucianism presupposes that human status is part of nature, it is true that Descartes defines the human soul as an exceptional being that is not subordinate to nature.
