In the Joseon period, the nobility and literati classes played an important role in the world of painting, producing painters, collectors and patrons. Most of these individuals were Confucian scholars, known in Korean as seonbi. Joseon’s most esteemed intellectuals, seonbi were recorded in Sino-Korean documents as yu(儒), sa(士) or sarim(士林). Seonbi who painted were referred to as seonbi hwaga or yuhwa. But in contemporary art history, the term munin hwaga (“literary painter”) is more universally used than yuhwa, while the universal tendency is to refer to their paintings as muninhwa (“literary paintings”). This study is my attempt to reconsider such terms and concepts.
In the Joseon period, active adoption and imitation of Chinese wenrenhua (“literati paintings”; the Chinese pronunciation of muninhwa) and the works of Southern School painters began in the 18th century. It was around this time that the term yuhwa came into use. At this time, the term muninhwa was not used in Joseon because paintings by Joseon seonbi differed in several ways from those of Chinese literati and Southern School painters, so that the former attempted to both respect the latter and avoid using a directly equivalent term for describing their paintings.
The same phenomenon manifested itself in Japan. Korea’s eastern neighbor had no literati class of its own. In the mid-18th century it also developed an interest in and embraced Chinese literati and Southern School paintings, but, like Korea, differed from China in several respects. Therefore the terms Nihon bunjinga (bunjinga being the Japanese pronunciation of muninhwa) and nanga are are used in Japan from the end of the 19th century to refer to its own literati paintings, demonstrating a difference from Chinese literati and Southern School paintings.
In Korea’s modern period, a mixture of the terms muninhwa, namjonghwa (“Southern School paintings”), namjong muninhwa (“South School literati paintings”) and namhwa (“Southern paintings”; the Korean pronunciation of the Japanese term nanga) was used, despite the existence of the term yuhwa. This was either because of a lack of awareness of the traditions of Joseon or because of influence from the Japanese colonial view of history or from Japanese art and art history. Unfortunately, this influence persisted even after Korea’s liberation from Japan, and Joseon-style seonbi and Southern School paintings are still referred to as muninhwa, namjonghwa or namjong muninhwa today.
In this study, I consider the way seonbi artists who painted were known as yuhwa, and how the paintings they produced were known by the same term. I attempt to describe the circumstances in which later on, during the Japanese colonial period, the term yuhwa disappeared and was replaced by indiscriminate use of words such as muninhwa, namjong muninhwa and namhwa.
When used to denote Joseon seonbi paintings, the term yuhwa was not based on a specifically defined concept: on one hand, it related to social status; on the other, it was linked to the stylistic characteristics of the paintings produced by seonbi. This is similar to the way Tung Chi-chang’s concept of Southern School paintings and literati paintings was used sometimes in the context of social class and sometimes in the context of style in his theory of the Southern and Northern schools. But it is clear that yuhwa were oriented toward different concepts and styles to those of the works of court painters or professional painters. In this study, I propose the use of “seonbi paintings” and “yuhwa” as terms to denote paintings produced and appreciated by the literati class, who were responsible for an important phase in painting in the Joseon period. These terms are significant in that they serve to emphasize the identity and meaning of a Korean painting style different to those of Chinese and Japanese literati paintings.
