At the end of the 19th century, traditional Confucian intellectuals were forced to explore their lives as intellectuals in some way, encountering the invasion of Western modernity and Japanese imperialism. In particular, as they went through the Gyeongsul-gukchi(庚戌國恥), they faced a realistic concern that they could not accept the barbaric rule of Japanese imperialism as well as their self-identity as Confucian intellectuals. As a result, some raised the righteous army to protest, others killed themselves, and others left their homeland and fled to Manchuria.
Sonul(小訥) Noh Sang-jik(盧相稷), along with his older brother Daenul(大訥) Noh Sang-ik(盧相益), settled in a place called a folding village near Andong County, China, at the end of 1911, the year after the country's ruined, and tried to establish a living community for exiled people. In addition to these brothers, about 10 Confucian intellectuals, including Ahn Hyo-je, who defected from Uiryeong, Lee Geon-seung and Jeong Won-ha, who defected from Ganghwa, and Lee Seung-hee, who fled Seongju, will join in turn. The community could be maintained until the late 1920s, when its members died or aged and could no longer endure. However, just before the start of a full-fledged career by preparing for a community, the street job inevitably returned to the country due to the misfortune of the family.
Noh Sang-jik, who unexpectedly returned to his homeland, found a residence in Miryang, where he had left. And I resume the lessons I used to do there. Then, after the lecture space was greatly reconstructed in 1914, the name of the Seodang was changed from the existing Yongjoog-so(容衆所) to Jaam(紫巖) Seodang. Rather than accepting and teaching many people, he dreamed of becoming a kind of teaching community where only students who had an unchanging heart in the reality of their country accepted and lived together as well as teaching. And that's why I thought it was the only way to realize the same dream, albeit in a different place than the exile comrades struggling in Manchuria.
Noh Sang-jik tried to fulfill his duty as a Confucian intellectual through his ‘講學’ studies with a ‘自靖’ of his own until he died in 1931 at the age of 78. He also directly participated in the independence movement, including signing the Paris letter. In recognition of this achievement, the national foundation packaging was awarded in 2003 and is buried in the tomb of independence fighters at the current Daejeon National Cemetery. Despite Japan's conciliation and intimidation, the power to protect himself to the end seems to have come from the spirit of ‘尙友’ embodied in the Yuga Sutra, the friendship with ‘同志’, who lived in exile and teaching together whenever it was difficult, and the family sense that he should live unashamedly as a descendant of a prestigious family. This aspect is more evident when looking closely at the trajectory of life, which is why it is necessary to pay more attention to life history reading rather than grand ideology or justification.
