The work of Henry James is a turningpoing in the criticism and theory of the novel, and he is recognized as one of the novelists who pierced the substance of the novel. The purpose of this paper lies in helping to understand the essence of the novel and to appreciate it.
James points out that there is an analogy between the novel and painting because they both attempt to represent life, which is their inspiration and process. And he contends that the novel is a record of life like history, and is great and sincere like philosophy or religion. Hence, he concludes that the novel is a great form of art. Mr Besant attempted to state quite definitely what the novelist has to do to write a good novel. This is a mistage, according to James'argument. For art, especially the novel, is the world with unlimited possibility, and its beauty can be created only by free imagination. so James criticizes Besant's principles, one by one.
First, Besant said that the novelist must only write a novel from his own experience in order to depict real characters and situations. But the measure of reality is very difficult to fix," and the novelist, by his imaginative power, can create a world which he has not experienced. Second, Besant said that "one should enter one's notes in a common-place book." But one can not learn how to select notes and enter them into the novel. He must learn it by himself. Third, Besant separated the modern English novel from the ancient English novel. But a novel is a living thing, and its parts can not be separated, Thus, one can not make separations between remance and the novel, between a novel of incident and a novel of character, or between modern and ancient novels. There is only one distinction between good and bad novels, or between "that which has life and that which has it not." Fourth, Besant said that " a story must consist of adventures." But everything in one's daily life can be adventure as well as a story. Last, Besant said that one must write a novel with "conscious moral purpose." But the purpose can corrupt the artistic beauty of the novel, and can possibly turn it into propaganda.
In Besant's principles, there are some aspects for the young noveliststs to follow. However, they are likely to restrict their creative freedom. And the house of fiction has a million windows to be pierced. That is why the novel should be a great form of art, and James wrote the essay.
