This study discusses the publications and poetic world of Ugo Yi Tae-Ro(1848~1928) who was active in Homan in the transition to modern era. He was born to a family that valued Confucian tradition and discipline and learned Chinese literary as a child. He was educated by Nosa Gi Jung-Jin when he was younger and visited Myeonam Choi Ik-Hyun to discuss the current affairs when he was older. At that time, he had a conservative worldview to fight the foreign influence based on the Annals of Justice of Chunqiu as most other Confucian scholars. He left a number of poems as a Confucian scholar and a patriot. When he passed away in 1928, his descents and acquaintances gathered his poems to compile 『Sir Ugo’s Collection』. However, it was not published at that time, but it was published as 『Sir Ugo’s Posthumous Work』 in 1949 after the liberation of Korea. 『Sir Ugo’s Collection』 was a part of it and discovered while I was gathering resources. It originally included nine books with no volumes, but it was reduced to three books, seven volumes when it was published as 『Sir Ugo’s Posthumous Work』. When Choi Ik-Hyun martyred in Daemado Island in 1906, Ugo gathered his resources to compile 『Sir Myeonam’s Collection』 and 『Myeonam Jipcho Bujegaseo』 to commemorate his patriotic spirit. In regards to the poetic world of Ugo, I focused on the three major aspects: first, he was a Confucian scholar and wrote poems about his life and philosophical attitude. Second, he wrote poems about the patriotic view of reality and his loyalty while living in a time of historical turmoil. Third, he sang about the life of a hermit who left the society to uphold his faith when the Dynasty fell. In sum, Ugo Yi Tae-Ro was a scholar and patriot of Honam who did not surrender to the unjust reality and upheld the righteous spirit of a scholar in the historical turmoil of the late 19th Century that came with western colonization of the East.
