Shen Zhou(1427-1509), the founder of the Wu School of painting, born to a family of scholars and artists in Changzhou. He was able to live comfortably without attempting an official career, chose to live a life of quiet retirement at home and devoted much of his leisure to literary and artistic pursuits. He exemplified the scholar-artist ideal of painting and practiced calligraphy as a from of self-cultivation. Although most recent studies on Shen Zhou`s painting centered on his landscape painting, he was also an accomplished bird-and-flower painter, and he occupies an important place in the development of literati painting in this genre. This article examines Shen Zhou`s bird-and-flower painting focusing on the most representative works in two albums; Drawings from Life and Dream Journey in the collections of the Taipei Palace Museum and the Beijing Palace Museum respectively, to figure out what is his distinctive painting style and how he established the tradition of literati bird-and-flower painting. Drawings from Life, dated 1494, is an album of sixteen leaves with paintings of animals and flowers. In the self-inscription attached to the album, Shen Zhou declared that he strived to transcend painting as form-likeness to express his personal feelings about various aspects of life. Thus he inscribed his personality onto the surface of his work through ingenuous calligraphic brushwork and inventive compositions. Dream Journey, an album of seventeen paintings, consists of seven landscapes and ten images of cape jasmine, apricot, hibiscus, hollyhock, stem lettuce, loquats, pomegranate, chick, cicada singing in the autumn willows, and a water buffalo grazing on rolling hills. In the inscription following the painting, Shen Zhou said that he painted the album to enjoy as a dream journey, as Zong Bing(375-443) did with the landscape painting. The flowers are painted in light colors, some with and some without outlines. Shen`s style is characterized by ease and spontaneity, quite different from both Sun Long`s(fl. 15th century) carefree simplicity and Lin Liang`s(ca. 1426-1480) boldness and unrestraint. Shen Zhou places more emphasis on conveying his thoughts and feelings with a poem or inscription accompanies each painting. The poems enlarged the painting`s theme, introducing various overtones, thus enriched the content. Shen Zhou liked to paint individual flowers or animals to keep his paintings clean and simple, giving prominence to the brushwork and ink. In following the tradition of bird-and-flower painting styles of the Song and Yuan dynasties, Shen Zhou developed an amiable and unique personal style characterized by quick, bold brush strokes combined with subtle, light colors or various tones of ink, which bring out forms and texture of the flowers and animals he depicted. His brush work and simple, clear composition used in two albums reflects his landscape painting style which reached maturity when he was about fifty years old. By skillfully combining poetry, essays, calligraphy and painting in the tradition of literati painting, Shen Zhou turns paintings of flowers and animals into images that goes beyond form-likeness and conventional symbolism, and conveys his own thoughts and emotions. With Shen Zhou`s influence, bird-and-flower painting gradually came to be appreciated by a much wider audience than before and recognized as an important genre of literati painting. Shen`s influence on later generations is profound. Wen Zhengming(1470-1559) and Tang Yin(1470-1524) painted bird-and-flower painting with the strong influence of Shen Zhou. Not only the Wu school painters Chen Shun(1483-1544), Wang Guxiang(1501-1568), Zhou Zhimien(1580-1620), but Xu Wei(1521-1593) and Yun Shouping(1633-1690) were also influenced by Shen Zhou, and responsible for a new upsurge in the popularity of literati bird-and-flower painting in the Qing dynasty.
