Since the late 20th century, we have witnessed the historical changes of the collapse of really existing socialism and the so-called end of the Cold War, and the new appearance of the world of globalization and de-territorialization. These happenings have led us to critically reflect upon the conflict and the war of the 20th century in which the cold war and the hot war alternated, and the modern discourses which, focusing on class, nation, and the state, dominated the imagination of almost all the people living in the century. Now our reflection comes to the idea that the space and spatiality, closely connected to the modernity of the state and society, ruling the modern imaginations. Also we think that the modernity wields its power on the constructions of the mutual relationship between the city and rural area in any country, putting the two in hierarchical order. The modernity builds the oder in the relationship of the center and the periphery on the globe.
With this in mind, this article examines the images of the border composed of coast, island, and near seas constructed by aesthetical representation works in post-colonial South Korean discursive space. The border appeared to be problematic in the East Asia and also in the South Korea which had to embraced the post-War/post-imperial/colonial changes toward the inauguration of the nation-state system. The contemporary research is problematic, too, in that it presupposes the territoriality of the modern state as an axiom of a kind. Under this situation, this essay is meant to ‘cast a light on the concepts such as progress or modernity’ and to develop ‘the subversive potentials the cultural differences carries with itself in a modern homogeneous nation-state’, a potential of the research on the border. This essay as a part of the border studies examines the discourses brought forth by literary works such as travelogues or poem which, produced by post-colonial South Korean intellectuals, were circulated in discursive space such as a newspaper or a journal.
To begin with, the coastal area was aesthetically represented by the literary works regardless of their genre which focused upon the visual beauty of its nature. The aestheticization works were conducted on the seas near the Korean peninsula, so the seas was aesthetically represented, too. The islands, small or big, which the aestheticized seas contained appeared as an aesthetic object in the post-colonial discursive space. A series of aestheticization work processed with the focus on the natural beauty of the border or its naturalization. Interestingly, the work let the natural beauty overshadow things human in the border, naturalizing human culture and civilization constructed on the border and dispersing human things. As a result of this, the border came to be represented as the uncivilized and uncultured space where human accomplishments no longer existed. Moreover, the humans on the border came to be de-humanized, transformed into beast-like existences and even nullified. This meant that the border appeared as a space where humans or things human no longer existed.
In no time did the border represented as a non-human natural space appear to be feminized. The representation works, utilizing as a momentum Haenyŏ meaning a female diver in English, feminized the border such as islands, which was to be developed as a sexual object. The feminization and objectification was meant to promote male readers’ consumptions of representation stuffs by engaging their interests in the stuffs. At the same time, it was intended to stir up male readers’ desire for conquering the border by promoting their embracing the agendas of the representation work. Given this, we cannot miss the point that the conquering was justified with the humanistic rationale in that the border was represented as a natural space where humans no longer existed. This constituted the meanings of the representation works on the border which fo...
