A signboard (hyeonpan) is a fine work of calligraphy hung on the interior or exterior of a building that connotatively expresses the unique functions and characteristics of that particular building. Hwaseong Haenggung Palace (華城行宮) in Suwon was the largest provincial palace in the Joseon Dynasty, and in the major buildings of the palace were hung both sign boards and poetry plaques (siaek) featuring the handwriting of King Jeongjo and the most noted calligraphers of the time.
From 1789, when construction of the palace was completed, to 1795, when the 60th birthday Lady Hong (mother of King Jeongjo) was celebrated, sign boards and poetry plaques were hung on the various buildings of the palace. It appears that they remained in place without major changes until the 19010s. But when the portrait of King Jeongjo in Hwaryeongjeon (華寧殿) was moved to Deoksugung Palace in 1908, the sign boards and poetry plaques were also moved to the capital. Some are now preserved at the National Palace Museum of Korea.
The National Palace Museum’s collection includes six sign boards and five poetry plaques related to Hwaseong Haenggung. In Bongsudang (奉壽堂), the main hall of the palace, different sign boards were hung one by one at different times in the construction of buildings, including those reading “Jangnamheon” and “Hwaseong Haenggung” written by King Jeongjo, and another reading “Bongsudang” written by Jo Yun-hyeong, who was the greatest calligrapher in Jeongjo era. Also hung inside Bongsudang were two poetry plaques: one titled “Jagunghaeng hwaseong haenggung jinchanil akjang” (慈宮幸華城行宮進饌日樂章) written by Jeongjo, which extols the joys of celebrating the 60th birthday of his mother in Hwaseong; and the other reads “Hwaseong haenggung gyeongcha jeongmyo pansangun” (華城行宮敬次正廟板上韻), which is a collection of poems written by ministers in reply to the poem on the sign board written by King Jeongjo when he made his royal procession to Hwaseong Haenggung in March 1870.
In Jangnakdang, which was built with its roof connecting to that of Bongsudang, the poetry plaque entitled “Hwaseong jinchanil gujeom siyeoyeon jeshin” (華城進饌日口占示與宴諸臣), which contains a prayer for the longevity of Lady Hong, would have been hung along with a sign board written by King Jeonggo. The sign board “Nangnamheon” featuring the handwriting of Jo Yunhyeong would have been hung with the poetry plaque entitled “Nangnamheon yangnoyeon” (洛南 軒行養老宴), which vividly describes the people present at a banquet held for the elderly in honor of the birthday of the king’s mother. A sign board written by King Jeongjo must have been hung in Deukjungjeong (得中亭), and a poetry plaque entitled “Noraedang gujeom” (老來堂口占), also written by Jeongjo, must have been hung in Noraedang (老來堂).
At present, however, only a few restored sign boards hang in Hwaseong Haenggung and no poetry plaques at all. Particularly, of the sign boards for the main hall of the palace, only the sign board of “Bongsudang” remains hanging in the palace; the sign board for Jangnamheon is in Yuyeotaek (維與宅), and that reading Hwaseong Haenggung is lying on the ground on the right front of Sinpungnu (新豊樓).
It is hoped that the present study will contribute to the future effort to restore the sign boards and poetry plaques of Hwaseong Haenggung.
