This paper aimed to investigate the transition process of Hangeul calligraphic styles for about five centuries from the creation of Hangeul in the 15th century to the beginning of the 20th century, and to organize the various Hangeul calligraphic styles in the process. It is also to clarify the characteristics of calligraphic styles and significance of calligraphy history of the published Hangeul documents in the 16th century.
The text of this paper was limited to 34 published Hangeul documents whose literary value has been objectively proven among the Hangeul documents published by central government offices (Gyoseogwan, Gangyeongdogam), local government offices, and temples in the 16th century. These documents are mainly related to customs correction, education, medical care, and doctrine. It was found that the size of the plate and the size of letters were different depending on the theme of contents or the economic situation of the publisher, and the disposition of lines and letters was also found to have a certain influence on determining the calligraphic style.
In terms of the calligraphic style, it was found that there was a remarkable difference between the Hangeul calligraphic style of the documents published by central government offices and that of the document published by local government offices. While the documents published by central government offices maintained the refined calligraphic style of published Hangeul documents in the 15th century until the middle of the 16th century, the Hangeul calligraphic style of the documents published by local government offices since the early 16th century differed from that of published Hangeul documents in the 15th century or that of the documents published by central government offices in the same era. Its important features are as follows.
First, until the beginning of the 16th century, the Hangeul calligraphic styles of the documents published by the central government offices were generally similar to those of the 15th century, but it had been changed from then such as writing horizontal strokes in an upward direction and sharpening the beginning of vertical strokes. At the end of the 16th century, Hangeul calligraphic styles broke away from the square shape of characters in the 15th century. Second, it was found that the calligraphic styles of Hangeul documents published by local government offices and temples in the 16th century and of the documents published by central government offices after the late 16th century had a natural and individual characteristic with various shapes, breaking away from the refined and strict styles of Hangeul calligraphy of the 15th century.
These characteristics of the calligraphic style of the published Hangeul documents of the 16th century would have become the formative source of the Hangeul calligraphic styles and might have been the driving force behind the development of various Hangeul calligraphic styles after the 17th century. From the perspective of calligraphy history, this period can be said to be the turning point for Hangeul to become an object of artistic expression from a simple means of communication. The remaining tasks are to find a wider range of data and to discuss and investigate its value in connection with various disciplines such as bibliography, Korean language, Buddhist philosophy, education, medicine, and women's studies.
