This study set out to promote the understanding of “Revelation” in “Act and Being,” a thesis that Dietrich Bonhoeffer, a German minister and theologian, wrote to obtain the qualification of professor. For that purpose, the investigator examined how his understanding of “Revelation” shifted from the horizon of “act” and “being” to that of “Church” in his Act and Being with a focus on the concepts of ‘actus directus’ and ‘actus reflexus.’ The “act” he dealt with could be understood as a “conscious act”, which meant “directivity”. He maintained that Revelation should be possible through God’s act or a direct conscious act (actus directus) not through a human act or reflective conscious act (actus reflexus). He proposed the possibilities of Revelation being understood as a dogma, psychological experience or institution to see whether it could be understood as “being”. Those possibilities, however, have a limitation of God not being able to meet human existence. For him, understanding Revelation as “being” meant encountering and discovering human existence while listening to God’s Revelation and recognizing a change to a new way of existence. He regarded Revelation as an existential being rather than a certain being. He interpreted Revelation according to the concept of the Church based on the conscious acts related to Revelation and discourses about problems of existence, trying to address the issues of the Church as a place of understanding Dasein, ways of existence of God’s Revelation in the Church, ways of existence of human beings in the Church, and perceptions within the Church. In his Act and Being, Bonhoeffer tried to talk about the “Church as a place where Revelation would manifest itself specifically”. According to him, Revelation is granted to the community of humanity through Belief based on God’s direct consciousness rather than the reflective consciousness of man. The community of humanity represents the community relations between God and Man restored through Christ or the Church. In his Act and Being, the Church is the place where Revelation is unfolded as Dasein; the community of humanity represents the Revelation within the Church and the ways of human being; and Revelation exists in the form of community in the Church in relation to human existence based on sermons, sacraments, faith, and love. Bonhoeffer argued that God reveals and exists through Jesus Christ in our daily lives. Criticizing Paul Tillich, who presented transcendental God as an emergency handler only before the conscious limits of man, he emphasized that God exists as Lord of this world beyond the Lord of Nirvana. He demanded that today’s Christians here should stop understanding Revelation through transcendental and epistemological thinking, make a confession of faith in daily life for the Revelation of God that exists through Jesus Christ, and live in the Church where God’s Revelation claims its concrete existence.
