전북 비도시 지역 순회 영화 상영의 역사성 : 한국전쟁 이후부터 1970년대를 중심으로 = Historicity of Itinerant Film Exhibitions in Non-urban Areas of Jeollabuk-do : Focusing on the Mid-1950s-1970s

This article investigates the aspects and status of itinerant film exhibitions in non-urban areas of Jeollabuk-do, South Korea, focusing on the period from the end of the Korean War (1950–1953) to the 1970s. In the absence of permanent movie theaters, residents of most non-urban areas watched films through traveling movie theaters, commonly called temporary theaters. Touring film screenings were carried out through government agencies and cultural centers to convey national policy and enlighten the public, while simultaneously being screened by for-profit entertainment companies.
Watching movies provided non-urban residents with an alternative experience to urban culture or promoted their desire for modernization. However, contrary to the intention of the state power to “make a nation,” the space of itinerant film exhibitions was appropriated in various ways according to the interests and desires of local community members, including both local cultural elites and ordinary residents. The screening venue was not limited to delivering the country’s official voices through newsreels or propaganda films, but also had the potential to transform into a counter-public forum where important issues for local residents were discussed. In addition, for non-urban residents, watching a movie has become an experience of “going to the movie theater” that involves various purposes and events. It challenges the sexual norms and order pursued by a highly homogeneous community while providing an opportunity to reaffirm traditional values in relation to family ideology.
This article is significant in that it raises critical awareness of the narrative of film history centered on Seoul and cities, and places non-urban audiences’ theater cultural experiences at the forefront of historical narratives in relation to the daily lives of local residents.
