The DNAs were extracted and purified from below-mentioning various monocotyledons.
Bambusaceae 2 species
Poaceae 10 species
Cyperaceae 1 species
Alliaceae 5 species
Liliaceae 3 species
Commelinaceae 2 species
Acoraceae 2 species
Convallariaceae 2 species
Asphodelaceae 3 species
Amaryllidaceae(Narcissus) 1species
Ophiopogonaceae 1 species
Orchidaceae 1 species
Iridaceae 1 species
Melanthaceae 1 species
Their DNA bases were analyzed and following results were obtained.
1) The base compositions of the DNA of Bambusaceae, Poaceae and G~peraceae which
are under same class, are quite similar.
Bambusaceae 44-45% G + C
Poaceae 42-45% G + C
Cyperaceae 44 % G + C
2) A similarity exists among the DNA base compositions of Alliaceae which are of very high A-T type (29-33 % G + C). The difference in G + C content between Poaceae and Alliaceae is considerable (about 12%).
3) The DNA base compositions of Commelinaceae, Convallariaceae, Asphodelaceae, and Acoraceae each are identical within the groups classified in the same species.
Commelinaceae (2 species) 38 % G + C
Convallariaceae (2 species) 42 % G + C
Asphodelaceae (3 species) 39-40 % G + C
Acoraceae (2 species) 38 % G + C
4) Orchidaceae, Iridaceae and Melanthaceae have the DNA of same bass compositions (42-43 % G + C) and they are closely related to Poaceae and Convallariaceae from view point of DNA base composition.
5) Commelinaceae, Acoraceae, Amaryllidaceae and Ophiopogonaceae have the DNA of same base composition (38 % G + C).
6) The DNA base composition of Liliaceae has a little variability (32-38 % G + C), but supposedly more samples should be analyzed to draw definite conclusion.
7) Thus, with but few exceptions the DNA base composition is quite similar in closely related species of monocotyledons, but even in these higher plants, there exists a divergence of their base compositions among different classes.
It should be noted that a similarity of DNA base compositions among different species is by no means confused with its sequence homology.
