Segmental phonemes have been taught lightly in the English class through
minimal pair practice, but teaching rhythm and intonation tended in the past to
be neglected at the beginning and intermediate levels, and consigned to the later
states of English learning. There is no doubt that stress and intonation is a
notoriously difficult area to teach and learn. If Korean learners wait to learn
English rhythm until they have some command of English, by that time they
will have their own habit of speaking which can not be changed with ease. As
Myers( 1981:421) advised "whatever uncertainties there may be about the stress,
rhythm, and intonation of English, they can and should be taught from the
outset in the practical classroom situation.
To learn the rhythm of English properly Korean students should understand
the different syllable structure and equal timing interval between stresses.
Students practice to pronounce English words correctly, but little effort has
been made to assign stress on the appropriate syllable, which is the basic of
English rhythm. It should be realized that one of the biggest problems for
Koreans studying English is the difficulty of knowing where to lay the stress
in a word. For the English native speakers giving stresses on the wrong
syllable of a word is the common cause of misunderstanding. At the sentence
and discourse level, the significant word should be stressed and the remaining
words should not be overstressed, that is articulated hurriedly.
Without learning the rhythmic elements of English, Korean learners can not
be efficient communicator in English. Teaching English rhythm and intonation,
plus pronunciation, should be incorporated into the syllabus of all levels.
Thought and experimentation could well be given to the best ways of teaching
and learning rhythm and intonation at all levels of English learning.
