This study aims at investigating the semantic, pragmatic, and discourse-based nature of the conditions on the use of reflexive pronouns in English from the standpoint of the functional grammar. The main findings are as follows:
First, the standard account of reflexives that given two coreferential clause-mate noun phrases NP_1 and NP_2 such that NP_I precedes NP_2 and NP_1 is a major constituent of the clause, NP_2 must be a reflexive pronoun has no exception when NP_2 is the direct or indirect object of the verb, or when NP_2 is the object of the preposition in the "V + Preposition" complex. However, there are many instances in which nonreflexive pronouns appear as objects of preposition where reflexives are expected. Therefore, the standard account has proved to be inadeguate. On the other hand, the semantic constraint that reflexive pronouns are used in English if and only if they are the direct recipients or targets of the actions represented by the sentences has turned out to have no exceptions, That is to say, it is adeguate.
Second, the relation between reflexives and their antecedents is a very complex phenomenon which cannot be explained only by the syntactic approach.
When a reflexive and its antecedent are clause-mates, generally empathy constraint on reflexives, surface structure hierarchy, speech-act empathy hierarchy, and anaphoricity hierarchy interact and determine the degree of acceptability. However, the relation between a picture noun reflexive and its antecedent is much more complex even though they are clause-mates. Seven conditions such as awareness condition, picture noun agent as trigger, picture noun agent as intervening NP, semantic case hierarchy, surface structure hierarchy, and humanness hierarchy interact and determine the degree of acceptability.
On the other hand, when an emphatic reflexive and its antecedent are not clause-mates, the semantic constraint that an emphatic reflexive in a subordinate clause is acceptable only if it is in a logophoric clause and its antecedent is [+ logo- l/2] with respect to the logophoric verb that takes the complement, and the chain-of-command principle interact and determine the degree of acceptability. As for a picture noun reflexive which is not in the same clause as its antecedent, it is controlled by the condition different from those for a picture noun reflexive which is in the same clause as its antecedent. In other words, it is controlled by the following condition: The reflexive pronoun in a picture noun construction in a logophoric complement clause is acceptable if its antecedent is [+ logo-1] with respect to the logophoric verb that takes the complement clause and acceptable or marginal, depending upon the speaker, if the antecedent is [+logo-2].
Otherwise it is unacceptable. And at the same time it is also controlled by the chain-of-command principle.
Finally, Condition (A) of the Binding Theory proposed by Chomsky has proved to have some problems. Condition (A) says that an anaphor is bound in its governing category. The governing category of an anaphor is the minimal NP or S containing a governor and an accessible SUBJECT. According to Condition (A), an anaphor must be bound within S or NP by an NP that c-commands it. However, as a result of the investigation, Kuno's proposal has proved to be more persuasive. According to Kuno's proposal, an anaphor is coindexed with a nonreflexive NP that k-commands it. The assumption that there is a syntactically well-definable domain called "governing category" in which anaphors must and their antecedents must be abandoned. It is necessary to make the domain of anaphor binding open-ended, and let a semantice-syntactic chain-of-command principle yield an "NP-mate" and "clause-mate" effect.
