This paper examines the history and figures of Temple Gwishin on Mount Moak in the city of Kimje, which was one of the ten Huayan temples of the Silla Dynasty. Korean Buddhism emerged as the main ideology of Korea as a result of the magnanimous embracing of beliefs in heavenly gods, mountain gods, shamanism, and Poong-Ryu-Do. Korean Buddhism influenced Taoism, Confucianism, and Christianity in the years to come. The history of Korea demonstrates that the idea of a trilogy of Heaven, earth, and human beings has been consistently maintained in Korean thought, and this is well reflected in the history of Korean Buddhism as well. Therefore, we can understand how the history of Korean Buddhism is itself reflective of the history of Korean thought.
Temple Gwishin was one of the ten Huayan temples in the Silla Dynasty, and was deeply associated with the King's Palace in the Goryo Dynasty. Many important figures have passed through the temple throughout history. National preceptors Wongyo Uisang, Wonmyung Jingum, and Hyunwoo Jongrin, who have resided in this temple, contributed greatly to developing profound knowledge and enlightenment in Korean thought. At the same time, there have been many thinkers in Korean history who have visited and exchanged their thoughts with figures in the temple. Among those visitors, Yoonjin, Suljam, Yoohong, and Kibal Lee left their mark through the writing of poetry while Semoo Yoo, and Hagon Lee left their mark through the writing of prose. These visitors also need to be considered as precious parts of the history of Temple Gwishin.
Mount Moak has been the focus of significant attention, along with Mount Gyeryong, as the site for a new religion with regard to the philosophy of feng shui and the ideology of a new beginning of the world. Temple Gwishin, which has been one of the main temples in this area along with Temple Wibong in Wonju and Temple Gumsan in Kimje, went through many rebuilding, remodeling and renovation stages throughout history to become the temple that it is today. Therefore, the lives of those who have contributed to maintaining and rebuilding the temple, i.e, Yumhwa, Shinhu, Dukgi, Dohun, Joyul, Taehak, Yunhan, Dooshim, Sungchun, Bonghak, Sooil, Jungwoo, Choonbong, Bohwa Kim, Mansong Kim, Kangro Kim, Jonghwa Cho, Unghoi Jung, Shihyun Kim, Sangshin Song, Choodam, Gumsung Yoo, and Hyegyun, need to be studied and highlighted.
Moreover, those who are contributing to the recovery and reconstruction of the Temple Gwishin at the present time, i.e, Yongta, Bumhyun, and Mooyeo, also need to be considered as cultural figures of this particular period, and their lives need to be properly respected. I hope more support and careful consideration of the practical use and conservation of the temple based on its historical and cultural value will be possible, as Temple Gwishin is an important part of Korean cultural heritage.
