This paper observes that a flow of experimental art festivals of contemporary and change in the art field create a new relationship in vast society, making use of spatio-temporal cultural context and having an interactive property, and revive a meaning of healing and revival through new aesthetic experience. Through which, as one of the theoretical models representing contemporary art environments since the 1990s, it is analogized from a context of ‘Relational Aesthetics’, a concept derived from a book whose title is the same as Bourriaud's. The art based on this aesthetics converts ‘audience’ into fluid ‘participant’, and starts ‘a new play’ that creates a common meaning through equal temporal space with artists who offer the chapter. As
a form of site-specific performance or consistent process, the art is characterized as ‘participation’ and ‘transition’. It affirms the exchange value and its efficacy that belongs to the arts in society by causing meeting, invitation, and cooperation, forms existence methods and behavior models, and directs a new human relationship. Therefore, in relational aesthetics, a possibility and the will are revealed by situating arts/artists that create a common meaning in various forms.
In reference to this context, the article grasps a property of relational aesthetics in an extensive meaning by observing an experimental media art festival entitled <Ars Electronica> that takes place in Linz, Austria, while examining the naissance of the festival, cases of participant participating project, and the basis of themes and flows. Further, it considers creation and theoretical background of Bourriaud’s Relational Aesthetics and Relational Art, introducing counterargument and criticism against them, and contains reinterpretation of relational aesthetics extended through Bourriaud's later books. Based on this, the author identify relational aesthetics' extensive characteristics as creation of experience by ruminating the utility of relational aesthetics and putting body into spatio-temporal context. Further, through the cases of F. González-Torres's installation art, M. Fujihata's site-specific performance, and an experimental art festival entitled <Kassel Documenta> in Germany, ruminated was a cooperative alternative model of contemporary art.
In conclusion, the article prospects a possibility of art and art festival as an extensive community that forms a new relationship where human body meet in multi-cultural society, and pursues equality and ‘conviviality’. Hereby, announced is a birth of the art-players who adapt various cultural backgrounds where a ‘kyeo’ and ‘gyeol’ (spatio-temporal layers, in Korean) are freely ‘adapted’, and create experience, and through change in this cultural background, realization of improved cultural glocalization is prospected in that it pursues equal solidarity, exchange, healing and regeneration.
