This study sought to examine the technical development of rooftile manufacturing in Baekje (18 BCE-660) in connection with that of the production system. In the main discussion of the study found in the second chapter, the development achieved in the rooftile manufacturing techniques by Baekje artisans is divided into three stages according to the change of its capital. It was in the late 3rd century - when Baekje had its capital in Hanseong - that this ancient Korean kingdom began to produce ceramic rooftiles. In the early 4th century, Baekje artisans started producing roofend tiles decorated with a variety of ornamental motifs and flat tiles using various new techniques developed under the influence of Nangnang (or Lolang), Goguryeo, and Chinese Southern and Northern Dynasties. The rooftile manufacturing techniques achieved after Baekje moved its capital to Ungjin in 475 became widely different from those of the earlier period. The rooftiles from this period, unearthed at the sites of Gongsanseong, fortified the royal palace of Baekje in this period; Daetongsa Temple features outstanding regularity in size, manufacturing techniques, and decorative designs. The tiles of the original Daetongsa Temple, made under the influence of the Chinese Southern Dynasties, laid the foundation for the tiles of Baekje in the Sabi period (538-660) and had a great effect on the rooftiles of Heungnyunsa Temple in Silla and Asuka-dera in Japan. After moving its royal capital to Sabi in 538, Baekje built many tile-roofed buildings for government agencies and Buddhist temples as well as the royal palace. Archaeological discoveries show that there was no significant difference between the tiles used for palaces and those for temples. These also suggest that the convex roofend tiles found at the royal palace site around Gwanbuk-ri were decorated with the same specific motif for an extended period of time, whereas the tiles unearthed at the Neungsan-ri, Gunsu-ri, and Wangheungsa temples sites continued to be decorated with new motifs. In the third chapter, the discussion was focused on how the changes that occurred in the tile-making techniques affected the craftwork production system operated by the Baekje government. The early Baekje tiles made during the Hanseong period have no significant difference with pottery in terms of manufacturing techniques and tools. It was during the early 4th century when advanced manufacturing techniques were introduced from Nangnang - which led to the extensive use of tile makers (mogoltong) and the production of decorative roofend tiles (sumaksae) - that a division began to be made between tile makers and potters. The arrival of Buddhism from Eastern Jin is generally believed to have resulted in the establishment of Buddhist temples and a significant change in the production of rooftiles. As for the production of ceramic rooftiles in Baekje during the Ungjin period, the relics related to the Jeongdong-ri kiln site and Daetongs Temple provide important archaeological clues. The Jeongdong-ri kiln site was run by the government of Baekje for the production of both rooftiles and pottery. According to the inscribed tiles excavated at Songsan-ri Tomb No. 6, which was built with the bricks produced at the Jeongdong-ri kiln, Baekje seemed to have had two groups of artisans each specializing in bricks and rooftiles. The rooftiles unearthed in Banjuk-dong, Gongju show that a major change had occurred in the production of rooftiles with the establishment of Daetongsa Temple. It is highly likely that Baekje was able to establish a government-led tile production system through the construction of a full-scale Buddhist temple such as Daetongsa. Baekje during the Sabi period honored master tile makers as rooftile specialists (Wabaksa).
