The Fine Arts Department of the National Museum of Korea examined the cultural properties housed in Yongjusa Temple in Hwaseong, Gyeonggi-do Province, a representative temple of the Joseon Dynasty for praying for Royal family, Wonchal, as part of the project of a general survey of Buddhist temples. The collections in Yongjusa Temple included Eoje hwasan yongjusa bongbul gibokge(Royal petitionary prayer offered to Yongjusa Temple written by Jeongjo); Wen-Wang Rectangular Ding, a copy of a Chinese incense burner; and Xuandelu. These objects were bestowed by the royal court during the reign of King Jeongjo, reflecting King Jeongjo’s view of Buddhism and the characteristics of royal collections in the late eighteenth century.
Eoje hwasan yongjusa bongbul gibokge is a Buddhist stanza of petitionary prayer wishing for good fortunes which was composed in 1795, the 20th year of King Jeongjo’s reign, and in the following year, 1796, nine block books and two manuscript copies of the stanza were granted to the temple. The foreword of the petitionary prayer explains the background of Jeongjo’s intention of establishing Yongjusa Temple, and the body of the prayer is written in date sequence. According to the prayer, King Jeongjo had commissioned Yongjusa Temple as a memorial temple for his father, Crown Prince Sado, but it was also intended to strengthen the royal authority. The stanza reveals that King Jeongjo had a profound knowledge and understanding of Buddhism. What is noteworthy of the extant copies of stanza in Yongjusa Temple is that one of the two manuscripts is mounted in a similar style to the royal protocols, and the block books were printed and kept in several national archives in different parts of nation. It is presumed that the manuscript was mounted in such a manner to respect the intent of the king’s building of the temple for his late father and was reserved in the national archives along with the annals of the dynasty for its significance.
Two pieces of Wen-Wang Rectangular Ding and one Xuandelu housed in Yongjusa Temple are known to be gifts from King Jeongjo. The three incense burners are copies of the ancient Chinese vessel, cauldron, which was introduced to Joseon in the mid-eighteenth century from the Qing Dynasty.
Historical records reveal that King Jeongjo was interested in collecting antiquities since the time when he was crown prince, and the incense burners seem to have been gifted to the temple when it was completed during his reign. Wen-Wang Rectangular Ding derives its origin from an incense burner that a king of the Zhou Dynasty, China, commissioned for his father’s memorial service. King Jeongjo bestowed this incense burner to Yonju-sa Temple as a guardian temple for his father’s mausoleum, which conforms to the Confucian value.
This study reveals King Jeongjo’s view of Buddhism and his collection trends, and the aforementioned objects in the temple exhibit the characteristics of royal collections in the eighteenth century.
