Blood pressure reading considered to be abnormal have widespread implications and determine the need for further investigation of a system which influence the level of blood pressure. Thus the accuracy of blood pressure measurement has assumed a position of primary importance, since an error in one direction may lead to unneccessary and expensive studies, where an error in the other direction may lead to an important underlying problem.
Casual, office blood pressure determination using a standard sphygmomanometer have traditionally constituted the principal modality for the diagnosis and management of hypertension. Single clinical recordings may not reflect the blood pressure behavior of many patients, therefore, methods of assessing blood pressure behavior outside the clinic have been developed and include home recording by the patient, or a relative and indirect ambulatory recording. Although patient-recorded home blood pressure are valuable, limitations are imposed by patient's cooperation, frequency of recordings and sampling errors. Indirectly measuring blood pressure using automated device should offer significant advantages, ie., less examiner training and minimization of error and bias in examiner perception. Indirect(noninvasive) ambulatory blood pressure recorders have employed semiautomatic and automatic methods.
In this paper, we present our findings of the accuracy and reliability of two ambulatory blood pressure recorders, automatic and semiautomatic blood pressure recorders. The accuracy of one of each type of recorders was then tested against a mercury standard sphygmomanometer.
The results were as follows:
1. The mean and standard deviation of systolic pressure of ausculatatory and semiautomatic blood pressure device were 126+-20mmHg, 124+-20mmHg, respectively. The correlation coefficient of systolic pressure was 0.98.
2. The mean and standard deviation of diastolic pressure of auscultatory and semiautomatic blood pressure divice were 79+-12mmHg, 80+-12mmHg, respectively. The correlation coefficient of diastolic pressure was 0.97.
3. The mean and standard deviation of heart rate of auscultatory and semiautomatic blood pressure divice were 84+-16 beats/min, 83+-15 beats/min, respectively. The correlation coefficient of systolic pressure was 0.98.
5. The mean and standard deviation of diastolic pressure of auscultatory and automatic blood pressure divice were 69+-13mmHg, 80+-12mmHg, respectively. The correlation coefficient of diastolic pressure divice were 0.96.
6. The mean and standard deviation of heart rate of ausculatatory and automatic blood pressure divice were 84+-16beats/min, 84+-16 bearts/min, respectively. The correlation coefficient of heart was 0.98.
