This study aims to seek interlinked points between Buddhist and shamanistic rituals by comparing Saengjeonyesujae, Sanogugut and Sanssitgimgut of Buddhist rituals and, based on this, to examine interrelationships between Buddhism and shamanism. The two rituals clearly have different religious backgrounds. Lately, however, in the system of Intangible Cultural Property designated by the Korean government, both Buddhist and shamanistic rituals are investigated and researched together. In the system of Intangible Cultural Property designated by the government, Buddhist rituals, shamanistic rituals and Confucian rituals are not distinguished but put together as traditional ceremonies, thus necessitating a common approach beyond religious differences. According to the comparison, the Unsudan of Saengjeonyesuje focused that prayers pleaded to the messenger to call for various members of the netherworld(冥府), while Sangogugut or Sanssitgimgut focused on calling all the dead to "gutcheong," or the center of the ceremony. So, the subject being called was clearly different. Saengjeonyesujae believed in the members of the netherworld, thus the dead did not become the center, but in Sanogugut or Sanssitgimgut, the dead became the center. Therefore, three altars - Sangdan (上壇), Jungdan (中壇) and Hadan(下壇) - where Saengjeonyesujae was performed, all living persons were strictly excluded in order to focus solely on holy bodies (聖衆) and members of the netherworld. On the contrary, Sanogugut and Sanssitgimgut centered on strictly the living and the dead. Saengjeonyesujae called for various members of the netherworld at a blessed location, treated them well and cultivated virtue in advance. Likewise, Saengjeonyesujae proceeded as the netherworld came into the real world. But, in Sanogugut and Sanssitgimgut, the living that remained in this world sought to treat souls of the living as the dead, in order to properly relieve their deep rancor before going to the netherworld. In Sanogugut and Sanssitgimgut, members of the netherworld did not appear. If Saengjeonyesujae was viewed as a treat for members of the netherworld in the real world, Sanogugut and Sanssitgimgut were ceremonies of prayers for the living in the real world so that they could make a safe journey to the netherworld. Saengjeonyesugae, Sanogugut and Sanssitgimgut all shared a common purpose as ceremonies of the living for their after-life, but their methods of organization and awareness of the netherworld were quite different. To discuss exactly where such differences in awareness originated would be very difficult, but it seemed clear that shamanism placed more importance in reality than Buddhism. This comparative study was meaningful to explore the possibility that ceremonies of the living praying for their after-life were more universal. Thus, a new homework is suggested here in to further delve into the above-mentioned differences and their meaning in philosophy and world views.
