Mireuksa temple, erected by King Mu(r. 600-641) of the Baekche period, was one of the biggest Buddhist temples in East Asia in the seventh century. The excavation of Mireuksa revealed its unique layout, composed of three monastery sections in parallel, each of which has a main hall and a pagoda. However, the Buddhist sculptures unearthed from Mireuksa temple-site were very few and all in fragmentary pieces, mostly dated later than the Baekche period. Among them, there are some artifacts that give us hints about Buddhist sculpture of Mireuksa temple at the time of its first construction during the Baekche period. The small tile of the Bodhisattva head, which shows a wonderful facial expression and three dimensional modeling, suggests that image tiles were popular in Baekche to decorate the walls of halls and roofed galleries, A small and thin gilt-bronze panel celestial image as well as thin gilt bronze pieces of flower patterns are presumed to have been parts of a canopy or a banner. The big and small spiral Buddha hair made with clay unearthed from the main hall site and the pagoda-site of the west section respectively, although the big ones are assumed to be later than the time of the first construction, suggest that the original Buddha images enshrined in the three main halls were most likely large enough to have spiral hair on their heads of at least 3.5cm in diameter. The ground plan of Mireuksa temple was found by the excavation to have been three sections arranged in parallel, which is also supported by the textual record of Samgukyusa. This unique temple-plan, which has not been found in any other East Asian countries, might have been influenced by the Maitreya Buddha account of preaching three times after his enlightenment of the Yang Dynasty dated to the first half of sixth century, where a group of audiences gathering before Maitreya Buddha are represented three times. If such is the case, the central Buddha image of the three main halls of Mireuksa was most likely Maitreya Buddha, whose iconography was similar to that of Maitreya Buddha images of the Silla and Chinese Sixth Dynasties and Sui Period. From a stylistic point of view, the Maitreya Buddha images at Mireuksa might be compared to other Baekche Buddhist images of the seventh century, i.e. the stone seated Buddha image at Yeondong-ri, Iksan in its bulky body-form and elaborate carved halo, the clay head of the celestial image unearthed from the Jeseoksa temple site in its realistic and three-dimensional facial form, and the main Buddha image of the Seosan Buddha triad in the way of wearing garments and hand gesture (mudra) represented. A number of clay sculpture pieces discovered at the site of the main halls imply the possibility that Buddhist images in the halls were more likely made of clay than any other material, which is supported by pieces of clay sculpture also from the early seventh century excavated from the Jeseoksa temple-site near Mireuksa showing advanced techniques of clay sculpture, overlapping multiple layers to make a large clay image.
