As Daleski says, "A central feature of Lawrence`s thought is its dualism." The idea informing the theory is that of wholeness of being, which is seen to depend on a dynamic opposition and vivid electric flow of energy between the poles within one human being or between him and his immediate surroundings, the universe. A combination of the two poles produces a balance or reconciliation.
It is noteworthy that Lawrence`s sex philosophy in the relationship between man and woman was modified as he explored the true meaning of the relationship between them, his consideration of male leadership, and then his concern with phallic tenderness. But this modification of the relationship was almost always based on dualism.
The Man Who Died expresses Lawrence`s relief at coming alive out of the very man of death. It is reversal of the Christian story of Resurrection and combines Lawrence`s views on Christ with his views on sex. It treats not transfiguration out of the flesh, but transfiguration into the flesh; not ascent to the beyond, but into the present: not eternal beatitude, but realization of dynamic function.
In Part One, the cock serves as the governing symbol, but the cock disappears at the end of Part One after accomplishing his function as a symbol for the surge of life and vitality. His new-found freedom is a symbol of the sensual faculties of the man who died, imprisoned during the years of his mission and almost extinguished during his passion and death.
In Part Two, the basic structure is the pre-Christian Osiris-Isis myth of Egypt, Lawrence has shown a strong antipathy toward Christ`s over-emphasis upon spirit and lifeless mechanics of Christianity. Lawrence employs symbolic ways of expression, and dualistic principle pervades the scene.
As the cock in Part One frees himself from a rope and achieves aloneness and togetherness, the man who died also achieves aloneness from the bomb in Part One and togetherness with the priestess in Part Two. He gives up the role as a teacher and saviour, and at last achieves the complete resurrection of the body.
It may be thought that The Man Who Died is Lawrence`s own autobiography of mentality and wish-fulfillments like Lady Chatterley`s Lover when he was suffering from tuberclosis and gradually dying.
