Traffic means the travel of people or goods from a place to another. Traffic has promoted economic and cultural exchanges between countries and regions and played very important roles in military offense and defense as well as the transportation of people and goods along traffic routes. Roads are central facilities of traffic routes. Roads spread knowledge, technology and lifestyle between countries and regions. Traffic makes huge contributions to relations between central and local cities and social development in each period, and differences in traffic development have huge impacts on regional expansion, transportation of people and goods, and spread of culture, causing social changes. It is thus natural that people have enormous interest and concern for traffic from the early days. Since traffic encompasses culture and ideas in addition to goods, however, it is no exaggeration that recent studies on the traffic history show the directionality of organic combination with many fields including politics, laws, diplomatic negotiations, economy, and society. In the academic circles of South Korean history, the traffic history has not settled down as an independent and systematic field of study yet. There are no active activities of societies or research meetings for the study of the traffic history, and there are few educational books on the traffic history for the public as well as research journals for it. The reality of South Korea is opposite to that of the Japanese academic circles for history, in which the traffic history has long enjoyed the status of an independent research field, and that of the Chinese academic circles for history, in which the traffic history has recently attracted attention as a major field of history research. Research achievements in relation to the traffic history are far from small in quantity and have made recognizable progress to shed some light on the traffic situations of each period. Despite those developments, however, the research of the traffic history has not been active in the South Korean academic circles of history because of the limitations of the methodology that considers land and water traffic separately and divides them in consideration. If the two are separated, it will be only natural that research efforts should shed light on the reduced scope of the historic events and historicity. The present study proposed the following future research tasks: First of all, it is necessary to excavate new materials. There is a need to examine overseas materials including the ones from the Islamic world for literature materials and secure architectural materials related to commercial and port facilities for archeological materials. It is highly likely that additional wooden tablets, which are first-grade materials to offer vivid information about trade, will be excavated. Second, the quantity and quality of Jowoon system researches were rather poor compared with those of Yeokcham system researches until the 1990s. It is probably related to the trend of Korean history researches that have been inclined toward land more than the sea from the perspective of the continent history. Entering the 2000s, desired results were achieved regarding trade and exchange via marine routes thanks to the emergence of the marine viewpoint of history, the excavation results of underwater archeology, and the addition of the Memorial Society for Jang Bo-Go, the King of the Seas that was the former body of the Korea Maritime Foundation. Third, overall researches on land traffic have been less active than water traffic because of the limited viewpoint for its functions in previous studies as well as the research direction of reexamining the maritime history. Land routes may have not been utilized as diversely and actively as sea routes in overseas exchange activities, but there is no doubt that they have played their own roles, which should be examined to figure out the roles and meanings of land traffic routes more clearly. Finally, there is a need to expand the research viewpoint. It is fortunate macroscopically that more and more researches are conducted from the perspective of East Asia around Tang and Japan given the characteristics of the topic trade, but there is still a long way to go. It is needed to include other ethnic groups and states around East Asia in addition to Silla, Balhae, Tang and Japan. There is a need to review actively the frameworks or theories of trade starting with economic anthropology. Microscopically, it is required to conduct more specific analysis of actual places of trade such as ports and harbor facilities and items, means, and routes of trade.
