This article examines the meaning of the stylistic transformation of the Tathagata sculptures during Western We i西魏 and Northern Zhou 北周 dynasties (535~581), taking into account the relationship between the contemporary state power and Buddhism.
Only a small number of Buddhist sculptures remain from Western Wei to Northern Zhou dynasties, and because of this, scholars had not been enthusiastic in pursuing this subject. However, Wudi 武帝’s persecution of Buddhism during Northern Zhou suggests the popularity of Buddhism in Northern Zhou, and that many sculptures were created during this era. The numerous Buddhist sculptures recently excavated from the Xi’an 西安 Han Chang’ancheng 漢長安城 area also seem to prove this point, and such discoveries have elevated scholars’ interest in the Western Wei to Northern Zhou Buddhist sculptures.
Since Buddhism entered China, the style of Buddhist sculptures changed flexibly as it accommodated the intent of the contemporary state policy. This is also evident in the case of Northern Wei, where the Han 漢 (Chinese) style Buddhist sculptures appeared during the 480’s when the state decided to implement Han style political measures.
When the Chinese adopted Buddhism – a foreign religion from India – the Han style Buddhist sculptures most likely had the effect of visually impressing the people that this was indeed the suitable appearance for Buddha in China, an image suitable for spreading Buddhism in China. After Northern Wei was split into Eastern and Western Wei in the 530 ‘s and Northern Qi北斉 and Northern Zhou took over, the Buddhist sculptures changed its style from Chinese to Indian. This article examines the styles of Tathagata sculptures in Western Wei and Northern Zhou respectively, through consideration of the features presented in actual pieces.
The style of Buddhist sculptures during Western Wei follows and emphasizes the style prevalent during the latter half of Northern Wei. We can argue that this happened because during this time of the double Wei – one in the east and one in the west – there was a necessity to argue which among the two was the legitimate state of Wei. This was most likely the reason that the Han style of Northern Wei was represented during Western Wei in an even more pronounced form.
One of the most characteristic features of the Buddhist sculpture style in Northern Zhou is the fat and short body. As for the garment, the sculptures abandoned the Han style and adopted the Indian / Western style. However, Buddhist sculptures in Northern Zhou also had a conservative aspect, in that they maintained some of the traditional Han styles that represented the Han customs. Buddhist sculptures with features such as a knotted sash at the chest, covers both feet with the garment, avoid exposure of skin, are examples of this aspect.
This article argues the above-mentioned stylistic features of the contemporary Buddhist sculptures reflect the religious policy of the Northern Zhou state. As the name “Zhou” clearly suggests, Northern Zhou as a state aimed to revert to the political system of the ancient“Rites of Zhou 周禮.” In response to this regime, Buddhism aimed to distance itself from the Han style of “Wei” and to revert to its origin. The growing tendency among the Buddhist sculptures to adopt the Indian/western style can be considered as the result of such tendency. On the other hand, the fact that the sculptures also continued to maintain the stylistic features that reflected the Han custom, could be understood as the result of projecting the image of the Chinese saintly king on the Buddhist sculptures. Although it was customary to refer to the fat and short body shape as “child-like (童子形),” this paper will suggest that such body shape can also be considered as representing the fine physique similar to that of a dignified Chinese saintly monarch. During Northern Zhou when there were heated debates among the three religious groups – Confucianism, Taoism, and Buddhism – Buddhism needed to emphasize in the appearance of the Buddhist sculptures, its originality and its value of existence as the main national religion of China.
The ruthless persecution of Buddhism in Northern Zhou was followed by the reign of Wendi 文帝 of the Sui 隋 dynasty, who advocated Buddhism intensely. The Buddhist sculptures from the Western Wei to the Northern Zhou dynasty are significant in that they are the basis of considering the close relationship between the Chinese emperors and Buddhist sculptures in Chan’an Sui and Tang 唐.
