Time in history, unlike in physics or philosophy, is divided generally in (1)natural time and (2) historical time. There are several ways to understand the historical time, but two of them arrest attention here to discuss deeply. One is that it is the concept created in the modern age, namely ‘modern time’(Koselleck), and another is that it was contained in the story, that is called ‘narrative time’(Ricoeur). This article aims to contribute to a proper understanding of historical time by comparing and analysing the two models. According to the German historian Reinhart Koselleck, between 1500-1800, during the period from the Reformation up to the French Revolution, “history was temporalized, it arose at the end an unique kind of acceleration that characterizes our modern times.” Only by experiencing a number of historical events in modern times, people began to recognize the meaning and value of time in history, to have time consciousness. The closer we come to the modern age, the faster the time goes by. Historical experience has become the main cause and the driving force to make the sense of time. Thus for Koselleck the historical time was a modern, vertical, and diachronic one formed through the experience of historical events such as the revolution. Meanwhile, according to the French philosopher Paul Ricoeur, ‘historical time’ is mediating time to bridge the gap between the objective and the subjective time. The ‘historical time’ means here ‘narrative time’ filled up with stories. That is why the story, the narrative form must be a key component in historical time. The stories of human beings as various aspects of their lives take part both in cosmic time(objective time) and phenomenal time(subjective time), mediate then between the two times. The narrative plays a key role of messenger and cross-linking, which connects both of the time categories. Therefore, Ricoeur argues: “Time becomes a human time by being weaved in narrative form, the story reaches its fullness when it becomes a condition of temporal existence.” Time and narrative weave the fabric laced to each other in form and contents, make the complete structure. Thus for Ricoeur the historical time was essentially a narrative, horizontal, and synchronic one. Historical time is not a singular, but a plural one based on each person's unique feeling of time rhythm which could change in every time. Historical time is standing, on the one hand, on the area of subjective time which consists of people's lives and experiences, on the other hand, on the realm of objective time in so far as historian should work with the natural time. The time is being to eat the contents of history, but history cannot exist without time.
