In exploring the representational ethics Eum Heung-seop, Chae Man-sik, Lee Mu-young, and Kang Kyeong-ae aspired to as colonial Korea’s intellectuals, this paper examined a series of narratives on the wet nurse from 1930s’ colonial Korean literary circles as representations of the subaltern. The above four were either a writer expelled from the KAPF(Korea Artista Proleta Federacio) for opposing the proletariat literary group or a non-member of the KAPF writers, so although they had equally dealt with class conflict in their novels, they were dubbed as “the fellow travelers.” The four novels featuring wet nurses referenced in this paper were all published in the short period between 1934 to 1937, each novel a vivid record of how the four writers had evaluated colonial Korea’s rapid progression into a capitalist society. An intertextual reading of the four texts allowed the reconstruction of how the contemporary writers in the literary world of colonial Korea had viewed patriarchy and capitalism, the two dominant ruling systems that pervaded colonial Korea around when the KAPF was dissolved in 1935. The wet nurse is a profession in which the woman sells the breastmilk that ought to feed her own child to an unrelated child in return for money. Each of Eum, Chae, Lee, and Kang almost concurrently wrote a novel featuring a wet nurse as a female protagonist, evidencing that they were entirely devoted to the particular issue of capitalist patriarchy, a society where “the humanization of the select few reciprocates in the de-humanization of some others.” While wet nursing is a multi-layered labor of physical, emotional, and childrearing, the nurses were regulated and classified by milk quality tests and converted into low-wage laborers in the early-modern capitalist society, and Eum captured the resulting scenes of violence and exploitation of wet nursing in his novel Wet Nurse. Chae wrote his novel after hearing the news of a wet nurse’s child dying from illness while she was caring for her employee’s child, but his novel changed the ending to the wet nurse’s child living on happily, an endeavor to establish a moral standard in representing the subaltern. Chae also attempted to construct a narrative of liberation by presenting a wet nurse who is not commanded by the ideology of motherhood. Lee was self-aware of his status as a writer and a male intellectual and intentionally reflected the gap between him and the wet nurse in his novel to expose the limits of an intellectual writer representing the subaltern in contrast to a personal narrative. Lastly, Kang’s novel was a pioneering achievement in that it considered the wet nurse narrative as life history and encompassed the bodily experiences of the wet nurse—the profession’s minimum requirements of having given birth and breastfed her child. The wet nurses’ various, unique circumstances were impossible to contain in a unilateral conclusion. As a result, the literary circles of colonial Korea in the 1930s saw an outburst of works covering the wet nurse, resulting from the female laborers’ conditions colliding against the representational ethics of each writer. The novels, each depicting how the wet nurse is converted into a wage laborer in the transition to capitalist society, are reminiscent of Maria Mies’ probing elucidation of “the capitalist patriarchy” who observed that “capitalism cannot function without patriarchy.” Ultimately, Eum, Chae, Lee, and Kang’s attempts to novelize the life of the wet nurse as a female laborer only reaffirmed the impossibility of an intellectual writer rightfully representing the women of the subaltern, but are nonetheless highly meaningful in that they demonstrated their uncompromising will to not to take part in the silencing of the subaltern.
