This study examined the effects of computer-supported collaboration scripts (CSCS) for building common ground in computer-supported collaborative learning environment. The CSCS might be considered as an important aspect for designing collaborative learning environments. In this research, students were supported by external collaboration scripts that aim at supporting active participation on a grounding process. The independent variable was learning with versus without the CSCS that can support grounding process in dyads. Dependent variable was the result of collaborative knowledge building, that is, group cognition.
In order to find out the above described purposes, the following research question was delineated. Research question is whether the CSCS has a significant effect on the sharedness between group members’ knowledge structures and on the accuracy of shared mental model. To analyze their collaborative knowledge building activities the structural similarities such as sharedness and accuracy were
measured. A total of 116 subjects participated in this study; put together in groups of two. They were assigned into three groups; 18 dyads in experimental groups I with structured grounding support tool (CSCS), 20 dyads in experimental groups II with unstructured grounding support tool and 20 dyads in comparative groups without grounding support tool.
The results of research question are as follows. The sharedness scores of experimental group I and comparative group are significantly higher than experimental groups II (experimental group I > experimental group II, comparative group > experimental groups II). And the accuracy scores of experiment group I are higher than those of experimental groups II and comparative group.
These results indicate that CSCS helps learners to construct expert-level collaborative knowledge. However, further study needs to identify the following issues.
Firstly, the design of CSCS is limited to text-based in this study, but it is required to additionally take into account text with graphic such as concept map. Being provided various tools for externalization, students could easily compare and find common or different perspectives.
Secondly, the support scope of CSCS is limited to mutual understanding in this study, but it is required to additionally take into account common understanding, that is, agreement. After understanding each other’s perspective, learners need to come to agreement about relevant concepts and relationships.
Thirdly, this study is limited to the effects of external collaboration script, but it is required to additionally take into account interplay of internal and external script. External collaboration scripts can help learners to engage in grounding and collaborative knowledge building. However, they might have differential effects for learners holding differently internal scripts on grounding.
Finally, the number of students is limited to two within small group in this study. The hypothesis of group dynamics is that the more the number of members within group is, the greater a number of dynamic processes are. When learners interact and influence each other, groups and group knowledge develop simultaneously.
