Ⅰ) It cannot be a historical novel only because the background of time its remote and past. Historical figures and events should be treated smoothly with the writer's image. And historical novel must be written without crooking the relity and within the limit of then custom.
Ⅱ) Korean historical novel can be found over 1920's under the following conditions:
ⅰ) 1920's was a good season for the enlightment thought begun from Kabo Kyong Chang(甲午更張 1894) to achieve a success.
ⅱ). 1920's was time when 10 years had passed since the sudden increase of traffic with Tokyo after the compulsory annexation with Japan.
ⅲ). 1920's was the time when Japan's military government changed their attitude into the mild policy for Korea owing to the March the 1st independence Movement since the compulsory annexation began. As we passed 1920's, various literary movements were suddenly aroused under such conditions. And many literary magazines were started to publish as the means of literary movement. Thus Korean writer's should write many creative works. And accordingly they should choose their subject matters from various fields. Some writers chose their subject matters from the history and began to write a creative works. This was the beginning of the Korean historical works in Korea.
Kwang Su Ree's "Ga-Sill"(嘉實) (Dong-A Ilbo, 1923) and Chong Wha Park's "Suffocated Woman"(Baek Jo Magazine, No. 3, 1924), both mentioned above were the testing case of historical novel in Korea. While the former did not abide with the condition of historical novel, the latter abided with proper conditions to be a historical novel. Here we had the beginning period of Korean historical novel(1920-1925).
Ⅲ) The Korean historical novel which had such a beginning developed in many parts and the leading historical novel in Korea was Choon won's "Ma Ui Tao Ja"("Prince of Ma Ui")(Dong-A ilbo, 1926).
By the way, we can find two facts clearly in the historicar novel during the developing period (1925-1935).
First, Literature of Reality Adaption (the biginning of Developing Period, Ex., "Prince of Ma Ui"(by Choon won, 1926) and "Dan Jong Ae Sa"(by Choon Won, 1928)) were changed into the Resistance Literature for Reality (Ex., "Ree Sun-Sin"(by Choon Won, 1931) and "Young Ones"(by dong-In Kim, 1932) after the middle of Developing Period).
Second, the conception for the historical novel was divided into two parts : Viewpoint in Authenic History(Choon Won's viewpoint for Historical novel) and viewpoint in unofficial history(Dong-In Kim's viewpoint for the historical novel).
Ⅳ) After 1935, historical novel as well as other literature was under The depression from Japan. Jin Kun Hyon(玄鎭健) published a serial story. "Huk Chi Sang Chi"(黑齒常之, 1963) in Dong-A Ilbo but this was forced to be discontinued by the depression from Japan, Thus historical novel was forced to be in a trial period (1935-1945).
Ⅴ) Nevertheless historical novel writers were in one spirit of nationalism and tried to overcome the trial period. At last we were liberated from Japan. Unfortunately, historical novel was obliged to be in a chaos in new society, because we had been in Japaniness occupation for 36 years. Consequently, historical novel should meet shrinking period (1945-1950) in that confused society. As the historical novel tried to step up firmly toward the upper position, the Korean war broke out in 1950……
Ⅵ) Though Korean historical novel was developed in a miserable destiny of Korean people, it had always been taking initiaive in overcoming the miserable Korean reality. We'd better have the conclution that the Korean historical novel had the significant meaning for literature history. There is an inclination to disregard the Korean historical novel from the catalogue of a pure literature. Some call it Purpose Literature, Englightening Literature, and Resistance Literature against Japan because former Korean historical novels were literature which intended to inspire the consciousness of Korean people. This means that they forget the history of Korean people, that they do not know what the writer's responsibility is and what writer's conscience is to keep and that they do no know the catalogue of pure literature. And this is the result from misunderstanding of the worth for literature existence.
Ⅶ) Accordingly, the way our literature kept walking was the right one, and was out in the deviation from the catalogue of pure literature. As we cannot imagine literature without people, so we cannot think out literature ignored the national reality. We do not want to have such a literature that offers a lot of questions without giving us anysolving keys, but we are in need of literature that offers us the way to proceed, shows us attitude to accept and bring us solving key to overcome this severe reality.
Therefore, we most develope our Korean historical novel as our national literature, succeeding the tradition of our past literature.
