18th century Europe was a time of revolutions. Things that were thought of as the existing things of the times were destroyed with the coming of a new era. The industrial revolution brought material wealth and development of cities while the citizen’s revolutions brought an equal society that guaranteed citizens with freedom without any ranks. However, these radical changes have brought many social issues and confusion that also brought upon a sense of risk and anxiety about the future in human society. As a result, this period of time is also the period of disillusionment. Many people began to call for a strong government that would complete the revolution from the uncertainties of society as many people increasingly wanted to stray from reality. Within this atmosphere of people longing for change, romanticism began to bloom.
Romanticism was a cultural movement that reflected the new social aspects and desirable human character after the revolution. The romanticism movement comprised of not only arts but also philosophy, literature, music, and in all aspects of society. The differences between different genres were not strictly defined as well.
Romanticism started with rebellions against traditional values such as order and morals. They have commanded the liberalism of individual egos beyond artistic freedom, which was a definite contrast against neoclassicism that pursued the realization of ideal beauty ideologies based on moderation and balance. This made way for individuals to focus on their individual characteristics and personalities and to be able to express their emotions in a subjective manner. However, people not only placed their focus on their individual emotions but also focused on reality. Romanticism tried to express the stream of the times that yearned for change and also criticized reality.
The difference between romanticism and neoclassicism is also clearly seen in art history. Compared to artists of the neoclassicism age who prioritized the exact delivery of visual information and emphasized lines and drawing, romanticism artists prioritized their expressions based on their feelings and emotions. In contrast to neoclassicism artists who believed colors were a simple decorative aspect that filled the space according to the lines and shapes, romanticism artists brought colors in as their main aspects of their paintings. Delacroix, Jericho, Turner, Friedrich, Blake and many other romanticism artists led the romanticism style of art and also influenced impressionism, fauvism, and many modern artists of the day.
Romanticism denied the objective rules of art and focused on the subjective expressions of emotion based on one’s spontaneity, which influenced Western cultures and became the norm. This explains why the understanding of romanticism has to come first before understanding not only Western culture but also art history in general. This is the true meaning behind studying romanticism.
