Origen interprets the origin of humanity in three elements of spirit(πνεῦμα, spiritus), soul(ψυχή, anima), and body(σῶμα, corpus) in his ‘trichotomic anthropology’ or ‘trichotomy’.
The spirit is an inherent divine element in a man. As this is a gift from God, it is not a part of human self. It is because the spirit is not responsible for the sins committed by the man. The spirit is comprised of the higher element, ‘nous’ and the lower element which was included after the fall in the beginning of the world. When the soul is assimilated into the spirit by the guidance of the spirit, the lower element can become an absolute spiritual nature.
However, if the soul refuses the spirit and turns into the flesh, the lower element of the soul takes over from the higher element its governing role and renders the soul entirely carnal. The ‘nous’(νοῦς, mens) is where the ethical senses is revealed within the spirit and the spirit trains the ‘nous’ through practice of virtue, awareness of God and prayers. The body is a coincidental creature as opposed to the divine realities. Everything owned by the body is a gift and by exercising the free will, the body keeps everything without knowing what is going to happen in the future. Origen applies the word ‘body’ to both the earthly body and incorporeal body.
Origen expands the interpretation of the human being with his concept on ‘the image of God’. Only the Son of God, Christ can be called as ‘the image of God’ while the created human being is just ‘the after-the-image’ or ‘the image of the image’. Man should participate in the image of God and the locus of the man’s participation is the soul. ‘After the image’ is a dynamic reality with a tendency to reunite and assimilate with the image. This is the stage of knowing God anew. This leads the man to ‘likeness’ in which the man sees Christ and God as they are and knows what God knows. ‘The likeness with God’ can be completed by knowing God as a whole through resurrection and beatitude. The notion of ‘image of God’ and ‘like Him’ based on the fact that we could know God is the foundation of the Origen’s mysticism. ‘Nous’ is at the heart of this foundation.
This concept is neither the same as the Platonist term nor the same as the Aristotle term which sees the nous and the pneuma as one. In terms of its meaning, it is more like the Stoic term showing ‘governing or principal spiritual faculty’. The nous used by Origen is a biblical term expressing the dynamic tendency of the ‘man turning to God’. Therefore, it is appropriate to translate ‘nous’ to ‘eol’ in Korean.
