The Chosun dynasty is the period in which paintings were the most enormously and actively developed among the Korean history. It was practiced by the royal family from a noble family literary artists and court painters occupied at the office of painting, which was established in the early of the Chosun dynasty. the Royal family led court painters introducing and regenerating a new painting-style from China. On the other hand, Court painters made it more popular and establish a constituency. It means that court painters contributed to develope it as a high official did in Chosun dynasty. Especially, according to the prevalent of genre painting in 18th century, it was the period that contributions of court painters were the most outstanding.
However, documentary painting of Chosun dynasty was made by court painters have been relatively less interested and studied than that of a painting in the literary artists style which has taken on appreciational character. In spite of the importance of many paintings of document and paintings made by court painters occupied in Korean painting history, it was ignored when describing painting-history of Chosun dynasty.
This reason came from the premise that, in the case of documentary painting, the individuality or painting style of an artist was less sufficient than that of appreciational painting able to approach pure aesthetic and in the case of a painting in the literary artists style, it was made to realize his own artistic intention and enjoy it. On the other hand, in the case of documentary painting of royal, it arose from the difference of painting function which is that the order and manufacture was practiced at the organization classified into a royal family, demander and office of painting's court painter provider.
However, we can approach the true artistic value and describe much more unbiased painting history if admitting the character of document of court paint made by court painter not as the estimation which its' artistic value is relatively low compared to that of pure appreciational art but the distinction that it forms its' own art world.
There is a obvious difference between appreciational painting and documentary painting of royal court made by either the royal family's order or the purpose to preserve some events. It is possible to clearly understand demands and common use ranges of the paintings if considering the role and activity of court painters contributed to this manufacturing process. Then, the characteristic and transfiguration of the high official family's paintings may be reversely understood much more easily.

According to this premise, this study will show the painting-historic value and modeling style of documentary painting of royal ceremony, having strong historic characteristic, among paint of a court painter in Chosun dynasty.
The Chosun dynasty's documentary painting of royal ceremony is the painting produced in order to commemorate and record a ritual ceremony, practiced by a king or prince as a leader of governing country, of the country and royal family. It was made under the Confucianism a governing ideology, which was a law to restrict people behaviors and significantly influenced traditional culture since Koryo dynasty.
The subject and object of traditional court art was not disused or did not form any other major currency in China. On the other hand, it was more developed in Chosun. Especially, Chosun court painters at 18th century had strong self-consciousness and developed the creative and individual method corresponding to the racial characteristics and established a unique style in late Chosun dynasty.
The object of this study is to derive how the royal family who was a demander of documentary painting of royal ceremony, their moral value, and governing ideology dominating country in that time was expressed in the procedure of making a work of art and what the activity of court painter, a leading group of producing documentary painting of royal court had influence on the production of documentary painting of royal ceremony in relation to the characteristics shown on genre painting in late Chosun dynasty.
The documentary painting of royal ceremony is analyzed in accordance with the subject of paintings, such as 'Gathering of retired high ranking scholar official', 'Royal banquet' and 'Layout of palace', based upon 'Eui-gue' which is a kind of official archives that compile many ceremonies practiced in the court into a book. In this study, Only a documentary painting of royal court relating to many ceremonies and paintings drawn to commemorate them are estimated omitting the portrait and map. in the mean time, they have been continuously studied.
According to studying documtary painting of royal ceremony in Chosun dynasty, it is desired to provide an opportunity which is able to approach painting-history more diversely deviating from the a painting in the literary artists style centric viewpoints of the field in work of art.
