This thesis tries to analyze Hemingway's major stories, dividing them into three parts with an additional conclusion. The first part deals with Nick's stories including "Indian Camp," several inter-chapters, "Soldier's Home" and "The Big Two-Hearted River, " that is, from Nicki's initiation to birth and death to Krebs' returning home from the war
The second part deals with his marriage-group which stems to be as interesting a material to the writer as that of death, and which, male-female relationship, is actually the most important in human life. Though Mr. Bates said Hemingway has only one theme-death, it seems to me that disharmony and disruption between man and wife found here and there in his short stories seem to exceed the problem of death. There are none which show pure love like the relationship of Catherine- Frederick or Robert- Maria in his novels. Man and woman in his stories are linked with such a thin thread based on moderns' egotism that they are in reality on the point of parting with each other any time. Hemingway's view of women or children as a stumbling-block or an obstacle in man's way, of course, stemming from the four marriages lie had, seems as much as to say to marry or not to marry, that is the question.
The third part deals with the process in which Nick experiences violence in "The Battler," hates the world of violence in "The Killers" and then finally comes to admire courage, a manly man in "The Undefeated" and "The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber." And this part also contains his characters, luckless, and obsessed with nada, in spite of wealth, who need a clean well-lighted place or opium like music and religion etc., to get rid of evil spirits.
In the conclusion some defects in his short stories on a minor scale are pointed out. The motif they give readers is too weak even for a sensitive reader to observe. As one example, the motif of "Out of Season," the point of which is said by Carlos Baker that nothing is done, is not so strong as to cause a universal emotion. And apart front the merits of his peculiar style, most of his minor stories lack the beauty of structure to the point of formlessness.
Also there are some other opinions of my own about some of his stories which differ with those of other critics.
