The history of reading Aristotle's The Poetics is very long and then the methods of reading and interpreting it are also very diverse. The Poetics includes so many issues concerning the basic problems of literature and the methodology of creative writings.
Postmodernism, deconstruction and Lacan's psychoanalysis have raised much more fundamental problems as to language as a system of meaning. According to Lacan, language is only a ceaseless succession of signifiers far from reality and then has serious faults as a device of cognition. It is said to be a kind of lack. By using it, it is impossible for us to represent reality, or though possible, the representation may be that of falsity. Postmodernist and deconstructionist discourses are centered on this kind of skepticism on language. But it is ironical that deconstruction should not deconstruct its own logics or principles after all. It is due to this that deconstruction is also now called one of many '-isms'. It intends to deconstruct any of '-isms' but cannot be itself because deconstructing itself directly means the death of it.
The problem of 'representation' is very important in this sense. 'Representation' is one of the very significant criterions which divide the main currents of realism and anti-realsim. The Poetics has all the implications concerned with the main theory of realism including the concept of representation. This article aims at finding in The Poetics some seminal elements of modern realism theory.
First, we have investigated the problem of 'the objective reality and the objective truth'. According to Luka`cs, "the basis for any correct cognition of reality, whether of nature or society, is the recognition of the objectivity of the external world". If not admitting "the objectivity of the external world" and the objective truth as well, we cannot progress anything of realism. The Poetics is very important in its recognition of the objective reality and the objective truth.
Second, for Aristotle, literature is in nature imitation but, in this case, it is not the naturalistic or random copy of the things but the representation of the truth or reality. So imitation is, for Aristotle, not simply "a kind of play not serious" as for Plato but a very important device or mediation of cognition. According to Aristotle, we can have "the experience of learning and reasoning" through "imitation" and this kind of imitation gives us "pleasure" in its affirmative sense. This concept of Aristotelian imitation has been developed and elaborated as that of representation or relfection in modern realism theory.
Third, imitation for Aristotle is deeply concerned with the concept of "probability", "possibility", "necessity" or "inevitability". Aristotle thought that all things would develop toward a certain object, telos 'necessarily' and the imitation proper must imitate the law or rule of this necessity of the things. This concept of necessity has been developed as that of the "objective partisanship" in modern realism theory. Luka`cs regards the "objective partisanship" as being "not introduced into the external world arbitrarily by the individual but is a motive force inherent in reality which is made conscious through the correct dialectical reflection of reality and introduced into practice".
Tomberg extends the Aristotelian concept of the "imitation of action" to the dimension of the social, political practice and the "action" in this sense means a collective human process toward complete and absolute happiness in a community and the "happiness" in this context indicates a certain "intrinsic unity" or "men's successful harmony with nature."
Besides the things above-mentioned, there, in The Poetics, is much implication and insight which can be successfully applied to the modern realism theory.
