Since Postal (1971 :27-31) first used the term Tough Movement (TM), a great deal of material on this phenomenon has appeared. in all of this research, there has been a wide spread assumption that the characteristic triggers for TM are adjectives (e.g. tough. hard, easy, interesting) and nouns (e.g. bitch, bear, snap).
The purpose of this study is concerned with the analysis of sentences such as (1) in terms of TM, Tough Deletion (TD), Trace Theory, WH-Movement, and GB Theory. This stydy does not attempt to suggest a new analysis about TM but to survey former analysis systematically.
(1) John is easy to please.
TM and TD based on the Standard Theory lack explanatory adequacy because those analyses can't account for the relation between matrix subject and the gap in the complement on the surface structure. In the trace theory, however, the matrix subject NP is related directly to the gap in the complement, because the trace theory takes the superficially weaker position that the moved constituent leaves behind a phonological null 'trace' t, interpreted as a variable bound anaphorically to the moved constituent.
The wh-analysis (Chomsky 1977b: 102-110) deals with tough constructions by means of two distinct rules; WH-Movement and a Rule of Predication. However, the wh-analysis has no empirical evidence to support the hypothesis that wh-Movement is involved in the derivation of tough constructions apart from the fact that they appear to violate Chomsky's constraints (1977a) on rules. And the wh-Movement does not relate the matrix subject to the gap in the complement and, therefore, must be supplemented by other devices: the Rule of Predication or Reanalysis.
In a revised form (Chomsky 1981: 308-314), Chomsky expresses the relation between the matrix subject and the gap in the complement by using t. In contrast to wh-analysis in which wh-item is moved to COMP position, however, GB analysis moves PRO to COMP position. Chomsky proposes that the matrix subject in tough constructions is inserted not at D-structure but at S-structure.
