Korean temple bells made in the turbulent modern period, that is, between late 19th century and 20th century, are largely divided into three types: traditional, foreign, and eclectic. Of these three types, foreign and eclectic types account for the great majority of the bells remaining today. It was during the late 19th century that the Korean bell-founding industry, which had lain dormant in the earlier period, began to revive with a new political situation that led to the lifting of the travel ban imposed on Buddhist monks in the capital, the establishment of regulations on Buddhist temples, and the inflow of Japanese Buddhist missionaries. My research on about 190 temple bells across Korea cast in this period revealed that while a few large bells were cast by Japanese bell-founders based in Kyoto, Japan, the overwhelming majority of them were small and medium-sized. I concluded that this is closely connected with the establishment of small Buddhist missionary institutions across Korea following an influx of Japanese Buddhism that demanded small or medium-size bells as befitting the comparatively small size of the institutions. Another conspicuous feature of the temple bells used in this period is that they had the same shapes and sizes as the number of small bells made under foreign influence increased dramatically. One Korean bell-founder who actively participated in the manufacturing of Buddhist bells during the first half of the 20th century was Kim Chi-un. His name as a bell-founder first appeared with an inscription on the Ssanggyesa Temple Bell, which was renovated in 1916, and it was from 1929 when the Daeseungsa Temple Bell was made that he began to play a key role in the bell-founding projects of Buddhist institutions. His heyday came in the 1930s during which he cast, among others, the Seongmunsa Temple Bell (March 1937) jointly with Kim Mun-gyeong. It is the last bell known (to date) to carry an inscription of his name, but he is now generally regarded as the bell-founder who was most active in the production of temple bells using traditional Korean techniques in the period from 1919 to 1945, when Korea was under the rule of Japanese colonialists who were keen to eradicate Korean culture and, later, the nation itself. My research revealed that in the 1930s and 1940s Korean-style temple bells were made in many parts of the country and that these bells were made either by Kim Chi-un or by other persons under the influence of his style. The introduction of a foreign style to Korean bell-founding in the modern period brought many changes to Korean bell-founding techniques. Kim Chi-un, for instance, made bells by combining the foreign techniques used in the production of large bells with traditional Korean techniques, whereas the makers of foreign-style bells preferred to use traditional Japanese techniques. The style established by Kim Chi-un and his followers was not seen after the late 1950s, as by then they had ceased working, while the bells that appeared thereafter were madelargely using foreign techniques. Kim Chi-un is now known as the only Korean bell-founder of the modern period who left his name inscribed on his works and preserved the style and techniques of traditional Korean temple bells during the turbulent period spanning the days of the Great Han Empire and Japanese colonial rule. Given that he made bells for quite a few temples and missionary institutions across the country, it is highly likely that Kim Chi-un was respected as a master bell-founder. Korea in the first half of the 20th century fell under the strong influence of Japanese Buddhism, undergoing significant changes in the style and techniques of Korean temple bells. That explains why the temple bells made in this period provide valuable information about Korean bell-founding, which underwent drastic changes as a result of the wave of political and social changes that struck Korea in the modern period.
