A map is the manifestation of the spatial knowledge and technology of the times. Old maps were also made using the latest information available to the people in those times. Thus analyzing an old map not only provides the picture of the map technologies but also offers the window to the people of the times and their senses of value. The world maps particularly deliver us the old people's perceptions of the world in those days.
The existing old world maps of Korea are categorized into three according to the contents and features. But they can be also grouped into the Orient-oriented world maps and West-oriented ones. First, those ones made in the traditional ways in the Orient show the China and Orient-oriented view of the world with China in the middle. They are relatively descriptive of the world known to the people of the times. Second, there are imaginary world maps that were uniquely developed in Korea. Their shape is round and their perceptions of the world are far from the real world. Finally, the Westernized world maps were made based on the Western world maps introduced from the West and thus are modern with projections and the lines of longitude and latitude.
Among those old world maps, those China-oriented ones are characterized by the government's leading role in their making. The oldest world map of Korea containing the Old Continent known in those days, ≪Honilgangiyeokdaegukdojido≫ of 1402 is the epitome of the superb cartographic techniques of the early Chosun Dynasty. Following its model, ≪Honilyeokdaegukdogangrijido≫ and ≪Haedong gojido≫ were made in the 16th century.
In the 17th century, Chosun went through major battles with foreign countries in the Japanese invasion that started in 1592 and the Manchu war of 1636. After those wars, the previous world maps were mostly missing and they had to make new ones. The world maps of the 17the century show the changed views of the world after the wars. In this respect, it is estimated they would include the fingerprint of Wang Ban. The examples of this kind of world map include ≪Hangukbonyeobido≫ owned by the France's National Museum and ≪Chosunboncheonhayeojido≫ owned by the Seoul Historical Museum.
This study presents the consideration of the thoughts that can be read from the ≪Chosunboncheonhayeojido≫. Since there are no accurate investigations on this map, the first stage included the bibliographical analysis based on the shape, outline, and postscripts of the map. Using the characteristics of the locations and names, the time when the map was made was estimated. Then, based on the analysis results, the differences between its previous world maps and the map were examined along with the views of the world in those days.
As a result, the ≪Chosunboncheonhayeojido≫ was estimated to have been made between the outbreak of the Japanese war in 1592 and the fall of the Ming Dynasty in 1644. It seems like that it was the first map that was made after the ward in the early 17th century. The Chosun people suffered from tremendous pain and disasters after the Japanese invasion and also earned more affluent knowledge on Japan, which was reflected in the map. Its predecessors represented the Japanese islands in one island or gave different shapes to them from the reality, but this map described the islands with some precision.
From the map, it was estimated that Chosun didn't know foreign countries very well except for China and Japan. Parts of Southeast Asia, for example, were just introduced in small-sized names with no detailed information or pictures. This was somewhat smaller in terms of views of the world compared with the ≪Honilgangiyeokdae gukdojido≫. This can be explained by China's smaller views of the world than those of the previous Yuan Dynasty. As China's smaller views of the world were introduced to Chosun, its views of the world were also affected in that way. But there were some changes to the Chosun people's views of the world that started to happen after the wars. The changed Japan country reflected this well. Thus the map of the 17th century did show the reduced views of the world than those of the 15th century but expanded ones than those of the 16th century.
