대학학업성취도에 미치는 영향요인에 관한 연구 : 대입전형유형·사교육·대학생활만족도 중심으로 = A study on the factors influencing college academic achievement : focusing on college admission types, private education, and satisfaction of college life
The purpose of this study is to investigate the degree the types of college admission, private education for high school students, and satisfaction with campus life affect college academic achievement. The study conducted an empirical analysis of data collected from students at a regional National University from March 23 to April 12, 2017. The collected data was analyzed empirically including t-test, ANOVA, correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis. In the study, college academic achievement was chosen as the dependent variable. Based on the literature review, four variables that may influence the dependent variable were identified, which were college admission types, private education(two variables: duration of private education and average monthly expenses on private education), satisfaction with teaching and learning(five variables: satisfaction with the curriculum, teachers' lectures, major courses and lessons, liberal arts courses and lectures, and environmental satisfaction), and satisfaction with school life(four variables: satisfaction with support and preparation for employment, welfare for the encouragement of study and counseling, relationships with friends, and relationships with professors). The four areas contained total 12 variables. The control variables of the study included gender, location of alma mater, major in college, and average monthly household income.
The findings were as follows. First, college admission types had no significant effects on the college academic achievement of the respondents. When the independent variable was divided by the areas and groups, however, college admission types based on the excellent students' aptitude scores had significant positive effects and a greater influence than the type of admission based on the excellent students' school grades. The analysis of four college admission types produced significant differences in GPA, which was highest in the order of the type of college admission based on the students' aptitude scores, based on the students' overall school records, based on the students' scores in College Scholastic Ability Test, and the one based on the students' school grades. Second, both the duration of private education and average monthly expenses on private education under the category of private education had no significant impacts on their college academic achievement. When the independent variable was divided by the areas and groups, however, those two private education-related variables had significant positive impacts. That is, private education had positive impacts on the college academic achievement of students when high average monthly expenses on private education were combined with a long duration of private education. Third, satisfaction with major courses and lessons, and satisfaction with liberal arts courses and lessons under the category of satisfaction with teaching and learning had significant positive influences on the college academic achievement of the respondents. Satisfaction with major courses and lessons had the biggest influences on their college academic achievement, being followed by satisfaction with liberal arts courses and lessons. The remaining three variables, which include satisfaction with the curriculum, professors' lectures, and educational environment, had no significant influences on the respondents’ college academic achievement. When differences in GPA were analyzed according to those variables, however, satisfaction with the curriculum and satisfaction with professors' lectures had significant impacts on differences in GPA with the students of higher satisfaction recording higher GPA than those of lower satisfaction. Fourth, satisfaction with welfare for the encouragement of study and counseling had significant negative effects on the college academic achievement of the respondents in the area of satisfaction with school life with the three remaining variables having no significant effects. The analysis results of differences in GPA, however, show that satisfaction with supports and preparations for employment and satisfaction with relationships with professors were significantly higher among the students with higher satisfaction than those with lower satisfaction. Satisfaction with relationships with friends was lower among the students with higher satisfaction than those with lower satisfaction. Finally, the gender variable had significant positive effects on the college academic achievement of girls with greater influences on girls than boys. The location of alma mater had significant negative effects on the college academic achievement of the students that graduated from a high school in farming or fishing villages. Major in college and average monthly household income had no significant impacts on the college academic achievement of students.
Those findings have the following policy implications. First, college admission types based on the students' excellent aptitude scores had the biggest influences, which implies that aptitude should be considered as the most important element in college admission. Colleges and universities should search for autonomous selection plans according to their features by taking into consideration the aptitude, individuality and academic ability of a student rather than his or her scores and grades. Second, private education for high school students had positive effects on their college academic achievement. Third, satisfaction with major courses and lessons had the biggest impact on the college academic achievement of students, being followed by satisfaction with liberal arts courses and lessons. Colleges and universities need to focus all of their capabilities on the enhancement of their educational level and power by making plans to maximize the students' satisfaction with major and liberal arts courses and lessons and improving their teaching and learning methods.
