The Catholic church heading for the third millenium received cardinal Joseph Alois Ratzinger as the 265th Pope at the Conclave's fourth election on April 19th, 2005. Cardinal Ratzinger set Benedictus XVI as his Pope name and declared his first encyclical「God is Love」(Deus Caritas Est) on December 25, 2005.
As the minister of Congregation for the Doctrine Faith, he has served 24 years known the guard of strict Catholic religion with acute knowledge. But considering the present situation of encountering undiscerning relativism, secularization, and critical bioethics problems such as human cloning, embryonic stem cell studies and so on, people expected the encyclical to be resistant. But the Pope proclaimed what it seemed ordinary-Christianity's principle of love to the society. But this first encyclical can be evaluated as the one which clarifies the complex situation through the basic, fundamental and normal truth of love.
Christianity is the religion of love, practising it to the neighbors based on the love of God. And the centered content which the church started from Jesus has declared until now is love. But viewing the western churches where Christianity started, worldly situations of avoiding and disapproving religion, and anti-Christ actions, church can not assure that it has practised the real meaning of love even though it has spoke out love for a long historical period.
This thesis will like to take a look at the meaning and the value of Christian love, shown in the「God is Love」(Deus Caritas Est) which the Pope Benedictus XVI proclaimed as the first encyclical. Additionally, it will find ways of how the church should live on its third millenium as wells as the church images that is required these days. Finally, with the reflection of present churches, this thesis will like to suggest the real role of the church, the future oriented practice of love, in the perspective of moral theology.
This thesis consisted of four chapters will search the structure and purpose of the encyclical as well as the background of how the Pope proclaimed 「God is Love」(Deus Caritas Est) through the Pope's representative books in the first chapter. The second chapter will view love generally and biblically, indicate the relations between the three specific forms of love, Eros(ἔρος), Philia(φιλία), Agape(ἀγἀπη), and examine the essence and characteristics of love in Christianity. The third chapter, in understanding of love as the commandment, will look at love to God and the love to the neighbors on the faith of the bible and mention the relation between both. And the last chapter will take a look at the love practice as a response to God's love and church's duty through the pictures of early churches, the relation between justice and love, and the distinct form of church's practice of love. Furthermore, it will suggest the church's role for the real practice of love in the modern society.
Love is the core of Catholic social dogma. All the duties and responsibles that the dogma indicates are from love. Love is the essence of the relationship between a man, God, and his neighbors. Love becomes the principle of micro-relationship within friends, family, and small groups as wells as macro-relationship of society, economy, and politics. Therefore the love is everything to the church which follows the teachings of the gospel. Because everything is from God's love and it pursues love as it shapes up with love. It is the best present that God has given to man, a promise of God, and man's hope. Accordingly, the church should practise love to man and for man in this world.
Jesus is sent to this world from the Father and Jesus himself sends his disciples to the world. So this world is of the man who are called for faith and salvation and the disciples sent from Jesus should preach the words that prove agreement and love. The soil which the seed of love of the Gospel should fall is not anywhere but this world. This fact is clearly shown in the former popes' encyclic to the society and it is the teaching that is successive to the present pope Benedictus XVI.
Consequently, the life which the church group carries on should be in 'this world(Jn 13,1; 17,11)', where it's full of sin even if God has created, the chaos which is ignorant of grace but it is the subject of God's continuous love. So Christians should remember not to be 'the man of sinful world(Jn 15,18), but to be the light which lightens the world and the salt which prevents the corruption of the world. Therefore the duty of the church should be being 'the mother of sympathy' which embraces the world's wounds, pain, sorrow, and tears as an open one to the world and 'the truthful teacher' which can present a hopeful future, not a mandatory, formal one neglecting, turning away its back from the world. Love is the light. It's the only one that lightens the world in darkness and gives us the courage to live. We are created in the image of God and thus love is possible as we practise love to our neighbors. Accordingly the Christian practice of love is to try to make the love of God be absorbed to the society until the world is complete and that is the vision that the church should continuously aim.
「God is Love」(Deus Caritas Est), the first encyclical the Pope Benedictus XVI declared is based on the though of "love" which is considered as the source of Christian faith. The pope firstly emphasizes that the church which is consistent with Jesus Christ, who is the integration of humane and divine love should perform the duty of specific charity with prayers. And above all, Christians who are living the presence should acknowledge that living by performing love which is the essence of faith and core is the earnest message that the Pope Benedictus XVI is preaching through his encyclical「God is Love」(Deus Caritas Est).
