This study aims to analyze and interpret the conscientization process of unconsciousness expressed through symbols of Tarot patterns. In order for human beings to change, self-insight should precede all others. Through self-insight, you can identify what has given you a hard time; determine in what extent you would have to be responsible for or lay the onus on the environment; and finally resolve the problem on your own. Facing problems beyond your ability or experiencing frustration due to difficulties to gain successful outcomes in the journey of your life, it is the most important to try to pick yourself up as a roly-poly doll does. Only if you are self-aware, you will be able to have broadened understanding of all things and flexible thinking, which will possibly lead to self-control and, further, self-actualization.
As such saying Among all produced on earth, human beings are the most precious, we are ones who live a life together with nature following the laws of nature. Similar to Tarot in the western culture that shows the way people live their life since birth, Eum-yang-oh-haeng (also called Yin-yang and the five elements; Korean:음양오행; Chinese:陰陽五行) of the oriental culture represents the natural environment where human beings are born in and live a life with. The process of learning who you really are carries an important meaning as it may heighten the value of your life. Getting to know yourself is a process of self-actualization, and, furthermore, is an integration accomplished during interplay between consciousness and unconsciousness. Self-awareness is an unscientific notion as its levels cannot be evaluated by taking pictures, counting numbers, weighing on scale, or measuring with ruler. For the comprehensive interpretation of Tarot patterns in this study, therefore, the prototypical mental or psychological theories of Freud who emphasized unconsciousness and Jung who introduced collective unconsciousness are to be presented. This research paper consists of a total of seven chapters as follows.
Chapter 1 – Introduction – describes the purpose and methods of the study, and introduces related previous studies. The purpose of this study is to find a way to have self-insight by conscientizing unconsciousness using Tarot patterns. I, therefore, interpreted the Fool as the protagonist of our life, and its background as Eum-yang-oh-haeng. For this reason, psychological concepts including Freud’s defense mechanisms used as one of the human survival strategies and Jung’s collective unconsciousness have been adopted in this study.
In chapter 2, characteristics and theoretical frameworks of Arcana patterns have been classified by figure and shape, followed by more detailed analysis of the classified Arcana patterns. Completion of life cannot be attained by others; instead, it can be approached by making a choice of every moment throughout the life. Therefore, everyone sets up different goals of life, gains different experiences, and dies at different ages, and, accordingly, values of levels of life or goals of the journeys cannot be simply compared between one person and the other.
In chapter 3, Arcana patterns being intuitively read were interpreted based on organic patterns of Cheon-gan (meaning 10 heavenly stems; Korean: 천간; Chinese: 天干) and characteristics of the twelve animals of Ji-ji (meaning 12 earthly branches; Korean: 지지; Chinese: 地支) of Eum-yang-oh-haeng with reference to the original literature. Adopting the coding system of Kan-ji (also called sexagenary cycle; Korean: 간지; Chinese 干支), Eum-yang-oh-haeng is interactions between Cheon-gan and Ji-ji that decodes win-win conflicts based on Il-gan (Korean: 일간; Chinese: 日干). The protagonist of the life would be Il-gan which is the process of how the Arcana of Tarot live their life. Hence, the interpretation of the Arcana as organic patterns and 12 animals of Ji-ji would indicate the Arcana are not used intuitively but are established on the scientific basis of Eum-yang-oh-haeng.
In chapter 4, the process of the collective psyche of collective unconsciousness that archetype expressed as a symbol was melted into mythology having continuously passed down is analyzed. Jung divided the structure of the psyche into three different areas, i.e., consciousness, personal unconsciousness, and collective unconsciousness. Consciousness includes ego and persona, while personal unconsciousness has a feature called complexes. In the area of collective unconsciousness, the major Jungian archetypes, i.e., the anima and animus, the shadow, and the self, are included. Also, individuation that Jung has stressed is the integration process in which the self from the collective unconsciousness meets the ego from the consciousness.
Chapter 5 explains that defense mechanisms are oppressed by Arcana patterns that are warning signals of anxiety towards the ego and instincts to try to avoid anxiety. Using a metaphor of an iceberg to describe human mind, Freud defined awareness into three levels of awareness, i.e., consciousness, preconsciousness, and unconsciousness, while suggesting personality was operated by three components including id, ego, and superego. Based on this theory, unconsciousness shows an instinct to outpour inner energy, and if one of the three levels of awareness is loaded more with energy, anxiety and defensiveness would appear due to the imbalance.
With psychological, behaviorist, and humanistic approaches, chapter 6 explores unconsciousness through the defense mechanisms shown in Arcana patterns, and investigates therapies to conscientize the unconsciousness so such mechanisms would decrease. A defense mechanism does not simply disappear when it was recognized and understood, but massive efforts would be required to remove it because change never happens without moving into action after recognizing it.
Chapter 7 – Conclusion – analyzes the process of integration between unconsciousness and consciousness based on the study results. Arcana patterns are symbols of defense mechanisms suppressed by reason. For defense mechanisms to be conscientized and decrease, it is essential to accept both positive and negative images of our own, because the process of integration between unconsciousness and consciousness is no different from the process of self-actualization. Unconsciousness is an infinite world. No matter how hard and how much it has been discovered, there still is unknown parts. In this context, Jung claimed self-actualization was rather completeness than perfectness.
Symbols expressed in Arcana patterns tell a story expressing a mass of emotions controlled by the reason using all five senses in a same way that people appreciate art works followed by being healed. Arcana symbols naturally lead us to the world of unconsciousness allowing us to be pleasant. Symbols have a power to communicate with unconsciousness in a brief time, which has hardly been approached even by AI. Changes happen only when you feel and recognize small things rather than big events. Fates are made only after your mind has changed followed by moving into action. Unlike dream or fantasy, Arcana symbols are helpful in the sense that they allow us to meet archetypal images of unconsciousness in a consciousness state. Beginning with self-disclosure, psychotherapies help reduce defense mechanisms, awaken new meanings of your own life, and bring about changes into wise insights and positive behaviors. In addition, the therapies may enable you to look into your own problems from a fresh viewpoint and within a new framework.
Looking at yourself as a person who lives a new, healthy, and active life, you would be encouraged to change and evolve your life, due to the reason that self-disclosure through symbols may fulfill the needs or demands that have not even been recognized by yourself. Symbols may make several identical circles look different depending on who is looking at it. It can be a bread for a hungry woman, a ball for an athletic boy, or a full moon for a person who has nostalgic memories. Likewise, symbols can be different depending on who is viewing; therefore, one symbol is not necessarily involved in one specific therapy. For the best results, it is advisable a variety of therapeutic methods be integrated, and current situations and contexts of the client be thoroughly considered.
As an introductory study of psychotherapy through defense mechanisms of Arcana patterns, a great volume of literature has been reviewed to develop my logic. Hence, in order for Arcana to be advanced into a practical field of study, various approaches to psychotherapy should be applied, and, accordingly, theoretical framework of psychological approaches to Arcana should be established through systematic reviews, analyses, etc. Moreover, in the further study, it is recommended statistical and analytic investigation be conducted through extensive clinical cases.
