수집된 자료는 SPSS/WIN 26.0 program을 이용하여 빈도분석 및 기술통계, 독립표본 t-검정, One-way ANOVA, Scheffé test 또는 Duncan test, Pearson correlation coefficient, Multiple regression analysis을 이용하여 분석하였고, 매개효과 검증을 위한 Sobel test는Free statistics calculators version 4.0 program을 사용하였다.
This descriptive survey-based study aimed to determine the mediation effect of emotional intelligence on the relationship between social support and resilience perceived by clinical nurses, thereby providing primary data for improving resilience.
After obtaining approval from the institutional ethics board of Jeonju University, data were collected for the period September 12–28, 2021 from nurses employed at four general hospitals in J city, I city, and K city.
For analyzing the data, frequency analysis, descriptive statistics, independent sample t-test, one-way ANOVA, Scheffé test or Duncan test, Pearson correlation coefficient, and multiple regression analysis were conducted using the SPSS/WIN 26.0 program. To verify the mediation effect, the Sobel test was performed using version 4.0 of the Free Statistics Calculators.
The study results are summarized as follows.
First, social support with an average score of 3.62±0.56 showed statistically significant differences according to department (F=3.23, p=.042) and experience of department transfer (t=-2,26, p=.025).
Second, emotional intelligence with an average score of 4.83±0.81 showed statistically significant differences according to department (F=4.94, p=.008) and total number of years working as a nurse (F=3.33, p=.038).
Third, resilience with an average score of 2.52±0.54 showed statistically significant differences according to age (F=5.73, р=.004) and total number of years working as a nurse (F=4.28, р=.015).
Fourth, social support had a statistically significant positive correlation with emotional intelligence (r=.49, р<.001) and resilience (r=.47, р<.001). Emotional intelligence showed a statistically significant positive correlation with resilience (r=.66, р<.001).
Fifth, emotional intelligence was found to have a partial mediation effect on the relationship between social support and resilience (z=5.76, p<.001). Based on Baron and Kenny’s procedures, social support exhibited a statistically significant effect on emotional intelligence in step 1 (β=.46, p<.001); in step 2, social support had a statistically significant effect on resilience (β=.47, p<.001). In step 3, social support with controlled emotional intelligence had a statistically significant effect on resilience (β=.21, p<.001).
The study also found that social support and emotional intelligence are the variables affecting resilience of clinical nurses. Furthermore, it empirically confirmed that emotional intelligence has a partial mediation effect on the relationship between social support and resilience. Therefore, it is necessary to consider nurses’emotional intelligence at the individual level to effectively improve resilience through social support. This study contributes to nursing-related research by presenting valuable data for improving resilience of clinical nurses.
