This study explores the representation of women's subjectivity and resistance through the body art of women artists of color from a postcolonial perspective. Focusing on the works of African American artist Renée Cox, Cuban American artist Ana Mendieta, and Guatemalan artist Regina José Galindo, the research investigates the potential and resistant strategies of body art in challenging historical, social, class, ideological, imperialistic, and colonialist prejudices and stereotypes. Furthermore, the paper delves into the experiences of racial and gender discrimination faced by women artists who utilize their bodies as significant elements in their artworks. The continuity of colonialist influence, labeled as neocolonialism, persists in various aspects such as the nation, economy, social systems, body, and women despite many countries decolonized in the mid-20th century.
The artists discussed in this study actively engage with postcolonial discourse, addressing inequalities and exclusionary policies within the art world. Their works confront various forms of prejudice, including racism and gender discrimination, challenging the hegemonic discourse of Western-centric perspectives in both postcolonial and artistic contexts.
The present work analyzes several key points within this context. First, examining the development and characteristics of body art, it addresses the issues of alienation and discrimination experienced by the gendered body, considering artistic and discursive aspects.
The second is to examine the development and modalities of body art, noting the issues of marginalization and discrimination experienced by bodies marked by gender, a biological and cultural construct. It examines the development of body art and performance from an art historical perspective, and at the same time, it considers it from a discursive perspective according to the characteristics of body art as it has developed within various philosophical and aesthetic discourses. Following this, in order to discuss the representation of subjectivity in the work of women artists, the theories of Amelia Jones and the writings of bell hooks are analyzed as a theoretical background for the formation of repressed and regulated body images of women of color, which are of particular importance to this thesis. It also examines the issues of body art theory from a postcolonial perspective and considers how they can be implemented in the artists' work.
Finally, in terms of body artists, this study analyzes three artists who have explored female subjectivity by resisting othering by using their own bodies as an important medium for their artworks. By using their own bodies to create artistic expressions amidst the chaos of decolonization, the three women artists bring forth new perspectives on issues ranging from the prejudice and discrimination against women's bodies under the influence of the colonial system in the past to the progressive expression of the body outside of femininity, gender, class, and ideology. This paper concludes with a discussion of the limits of representation of women's bodies in art by discussing the interrelated themes and presenting important issues.
These artists endeavored to reclaim their original cultures and identities through their own bodies, seeking to discover diverse images and powers of femininity from new perspectives. These efforts transcend mere aesthetic expression, representing an attempt to understand and interpret the female body within political and social contexts. The three women artists discussed in this paper demonstrated resistant practices to move beyond long-established images of the female body. Therefore, this study examines the body art of women artists through a postcolonial discourse, aiming to contribute to a deeper understanding of issues related to race, otherness, and gender within the socio-cultural context.
