Desire Under the Elms, Mourning Becomes Electra, 그리고 Long Day's Journey Into Night
이 세작품중 가족구성원간의 인간관계에서 가장 실패한 인물은 Desire Under the Elms의 Ephraim과 Mourning Becomes Electra의 Ezra, Long Day's Journey Into Night의 Mary라고 볼 수 있는데, 이들은 운명과 환경의 불사의한 힘에 의해서 현실에서 고립된채 비극적인 삶을 살게 된다. 이외 반면에 가장 의미있는 바람직한 인간관계의 가능성은 Desire Under the Elms의 Eben, Mourning Becones Electra의 Lavinia, Long Day's Journet Into Night의 Edmund라고 볼 수 있는데, 이들은 바로 O'Neill 자신의 초상화이며, 그가 평생동안 끊임없이 추구해왔던 바람직한 인간의 전형이었다.
Moving toward his late period, Eugene O'Neill, the pioneer of the modern American drama, abandoned realistic or expressionistic experimental tendency and wrote mainly family tragedies, which had strong naturalistic colors, based on his experience of an unhappy family life. In these tragedies, he dealt with the human relationship in terms of love and hate in a family. He assumed that the interaction among family members can be a universal profound theme of the humankind.
This paper deals with the human relationship in the families in O'Neill's three representative family tragedies: Desire Under the Emls, Mourning Becomes Electra, and Long Day's Journey Into Night, each of which responds to the crisis, the castastrophe, and the reconciliation. The writer aims to analyze the wife-husband, the parent-child, and the brother-brother or brother-sister relationships in the family tragedies.
In Desire Under the Elms, the wife-husband, parent-child, and brother-brother relationships gradually become destructive, resulting in a crisis of family dissociation through excessive materialistic and sexual desire. In Mourning Becomes Electra, the relationships become more fatal through adultery, murder, suicide, Oedipus or Electra complex, etc. The intimate relationship in the family absolutely becomes destructive as in a battle.
In Long Day's Journey Into Night, the human relationship looks very different from that of the two prior plays; the members of the family in this play suffer from hate, malice, anguish, feeling of guilty to each other. However, they make their best endeavors to establish a reconcilable and desirable human relationship by means of love, forgiveness and understanding to each other.
The three characters who suffer failure in the human relationship are Ephraim in Desire under the Elms, Ezra in Mourning Becomes Electar, and Mary in Long Day's Journey Into Night. They carry on their tragic life by inscrutable forces such as fate, the biological past, and the isolation from reality. The possibility of accomplishing the most meaningful and desirable human relationship is revealed in Eben in Desire Under the Elms, lavinia in Mourning Becomes Electra, and Edmund in Long Day's Journey Into Night. They are O'Neill's portraits of himself and archytypes of the desirable human being that O'Neill had pursued during all his life.
O'Neill does not simply describe a tragedy of a family but the tragedy of the family as a universal and basic human society. In these three tragedies he shows his strong belief that the family relationship of the present time, even though destroyed gradually owing to the advancement of the mechanical civilization, and the excessive overflow of materialism and selfishness, can be developed to the reconcilable and desirable through love. forgivenesss, and understanding.
