‘아메리칸 트래디셔널 타투’ 문양의 상징적인 의미를 활용한 애니메이션 제작 연구 : 본인 작품 <이상한 나라의 세일러>를 중심으로 = A Study of using the meanings of the tattoo patterns of “American Traditional Tattoo” on making the animation : Focusing on my work ‘Sailor In Wonderland’

국문 초록 (Abstract)

과거의 폴리네시아인들은 역사를 기록하기 위해 타투의 문양을 문자 대신 사용하였고 타투를 몸에 새기는 기본 행위부터 조상과의 정신적 교감의 매개체로 여겼다. 나라마다 타투의 형식과 상징하는 의미들이 다르며 타투가 생성된 각 지역의 역사, 종교, 문화 등 환경 조건에 맞춰진 형태를 띄고 있다. 타투는 신체 장식의 역할이나 범죄인에 대한 상징으로만 여길 것이 아니라 문양에 대한 정보를 다른 형태로 접목하여 활용할 수 있는 문화 콘텐츠에 대한 소재로도 활용할 수 있다.
연구자는 ‘아메리칸 트래디셔널 타투’ 문양의 형태와 상징적인 의미를 애니메이션의 소재로 활용하는 제작 연구를 하고자 하였다. ‘아메리칸 트래디셔널 타투’를 연구자의 애니메이션 제작을 위한 소재로 선정한 이유는 아래와 같다.
첫 번째, ‘폴리네시아’의 타투 문화가 미국 타투에 영향을 끼친 역사적 배경을 가지고 있고 고전적인 타투 중에서 최근에 생겨난 점. 두 번째, 20세기 초 미국을 반영한 문양들로 구성된 점. 세 번째, 해군과 관련된 ‘아메리칸 트래디셔널 타투’ 문양들의 모티브에는 애국적인 요소보다 귀환, 가족, 사랑, 죽음에 대한 저항 등 인간의 욕구에 대한 요소가 많다는 점이다.
본 연구는 ‘아메리칸 트래디셔널 타투’ 문양을 소재로 하여 캐릭터를 디자인하고 연구자의 상상력과 타투의 형태, 상징적인 의미를 혼합한 스토리로써 ‘20세기 초 미국 해군의 타투 문양으로 이루어진 사후 세계를 모험하고 영혼만이라도 이승으로 돌아와 사랑하는 사람을 찾아가게 된다’는 내용의 <이상한 나라의 세일러(Sailor In Wonderland)> 애니메이션을 제작하고자 하였다. 문양의 상징적인 의미와 문양과 관련된 폴리네시아의 전설, 미국에서 공유되는 미신 등을 사용하고 다양한 장르로 구성된 타투 중 ‘아메리칸 트래디셔널 타투’를 활용한 작품 제작 과정을 거쳐 스토리, 기획, 영상, 연출, 분야에 이르기까지 애니메이션이라는 전문적인 형식으로 표현하고자 하였다.
전반부에는 타투의 개념, 역사, 중반부에는 ‘아메리칸 트래디셔널 타투’의 배경, 문양, 상징적인 의미를 분석하였고, 후반부에는 작품기획, 디자인, 연출 기법 등 애니메이션의 제작 과정을 연구의 내용으로 하였고, 연구의 결과는 아래와 같다
첫 번째, 평면과 입체적인 표현방법 중에서 타투의 느낌에 적합한 시각적 표현 방법을 정리할 수 있었고 타투의 환상적인 표현에 대한 표현, 상징적인 의미에 따른 화면 내 오브제 구성방법에 대한 결과를 도출할 수 있었다.
두 번째, 문양의 의미를 이용해 위치, 역할 등을 배치함에 따라 타투를 구성하는 다양한 장르 중 ‘아메리칸 트래디셔널 타투’만 사용하여도 다양한 스토리의 창작이 가능하였기 때문에 여타의 타투들을 이용한 시리즈 애니메이션도 제작할 수 있다는 결론을 지을 수 있었다.
세 번째, 타투를 애니메이션 소재로 사용함에 따라 타투의 역사와 문화 등을 관람자에게 다양한 시각적 표현과 함께 제공하여 타투에 대한 부정적인 시선을 바꾸어 넓은 범위의 문화 콘텐츠 소재로써 활용을 기대할 수 있을 것이라는 결론이 도출되었다.
연구자는 전통적인 타투를 애니메이션의 소재로 이용함으로써 타투를 사용하던 과거의 사람들의 생각과 문화가 집단무의식으로 상징적인 의미에 남아있음에 대해 <이상한 나라의 세일러> 작품을 통해 표현하였다. 이러한 연구의 결과는 앞으로 타투를 소재로 애니메이션에 사용하고자 하는 작가들 또한 스토리 및 기법에 대해 연구하여 내용의 다양성이 부족한 ‘타투 소재의 애니메이션’ 창작에 도움이 되기를 기대한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

In the past, Polynesians used tattoo patterns instead of letters to record the history, and the basic act of getting a tattoo on the body was considered a medium of mental communion with the ancestors. The form and meaning of the tattoos differ for each country, and are according to the environmental conditions of each region of forming the tattoo such as the history, religion, culture, etc. Therefore, tattoo should not be considered as a role for physical decoration or symbol for criminals, but it can be accommodated as a material for the cultural contents that the information on the patterns can be connected for used as another form.
In this study, the shape and symbolic meaning of the ‘American Traditional Tattoo’ patters will be utilized for use as a topic in the animation, and the reasons for selecting ‘American Traditional Tattoo’ as the topic for producing the animation are shown as follows.
The first is because of the historic background of ‘Polynesia’ tattoo culture having influence to the American tattoo; it was occurred recently among classic tattoos. The second is the point of being composed of patters reflecting American in the early 20th century, and the third is that in the motives of ‘American Traditional Tattoo’ patters related to the Navy, most of them are on human desire such as return, family, love and death instead of patriotic elements.
In this study, the ‘American Traditional Tattoo’ patterns are used to design the characters and write the story combining one’s imagination, tattoo shapes and its symbolic meaning, and the animation titled <Sailor in Wonderland> will be produced in the contents of ‘going on an adventure to the afterlife of tattoo patterns on the US Navy of early 20th century, and the soul coming back to this life to return to their loved ones.’ The symbolic meaning of the patterns, Polynesian legend related to the patterns, and the superstition shared in the US are used, and among tattoos composed in various genre, the production processes using ‘American Traditional Tattoo’ will be performed to be expressed through the professional form of animation from the story to the planning, image, direction and field.
In the first half, analysis was made on the concept and history of the tattoo, and also on the background, patterns and symbolic meaning of ‘American Traditional Tattoo’ in the middle. In the second half, the production processes of the animation such as work planning, design and direction technique were applied as the contents of the study.
Firstly, among the plane and 3-dimensional expression methods, the visual expression methods appropriate for the feeling of the tattoo were summarized, and expression on the fantastic expression of the tattoo and the results on the object composition method within the screen according to its symbolic meaning were derived.
Secondly, according to the arrangement of the location and role using the meaning of the patterns, various stories were possible to be created even when using just the ‘American Traditional Tattoo’ among the various genre composing tattoos, so it was concluded that animation series using other tattoos were possible for production.
Thirdly, the conclusion was derived that by using tattoo as the topic for animation, the history and culture of the tattoo was provided along with the various visual expressions to be expected to change the negative views on the tattoo thus to use it as more diverse cultural contents topic.
In this study, traditional tattoo was used as the topic for the animation of <Sailor in Wonderland> to express the thoughts and culture of the people in the past which were remained with the symbolic meaning in collective unconsciousness. The results of this study are expected to help the creation of ‘animations in the topic of tattoos’ that lack diversity in the contents by studying on the stories and techniques or by the artists who wish to use tattoo as the topic for the animation in the future.
